Things to read
This week the report 'Focus On: Distance from home to emergency care' was published. The report examines the typical distances from home that people travel to receive emergency care, and how this has changed over time. It explores the distances between a person’s home and the hospital at which they attended A&E, or received an emergency inpatient admission, using Hospital Episode Statistics from the 10-year period from 2001/02 to 2011/12. It can be read in full here

Things to pledge
Don't forget Monday 3rd March is NHS Change Day where we are all encouraged to do something better together in the workplace. More information here and you can register your pledges here

Things have gone from bad...
We arrived in the library one morning this week to find that our library overdues hadn't been sent during the night. This meant the library staff had to engage their dusty brains and remember which buttons to press to send them manually. It transpired that a Microsoft update had been installed on the server where our system is hosted and the system had sulked - despite being tested first. Fortunately all was solved the next day. Please remember that if you borrow books from us you will get an nice little email the day before your item is due back so you can just hit reply and ask if you need to renew your items. If you don't respond the the emails gradually get less nice as the fines and admin charges increase but we really don't like taking lots of money off people so talk to us if you have a problem returning your items.

...to worse
A different morning this week we came in to find that following an overnight interruption to the power supply our best colour printer wasn't working and after a visit from a nice electrician it seems the problem may be terminal...18 months old and not cheap! Being without it wouldn't have been a particular problem as we have a lovely new colour photocopier except that we were planning a print job which wasn't compatible with the photocopier settings. Don't forget you can scan documents from our copier to your SCH email address without charge.
...BREAKING NEWS...nice IT guy from Uni may be able to help us with our printer.

...but all's well
So if you were in the library on Thursday you would have seen Kate and Gill with lots of bits of paper coming up with a 'Blue Peter' solution. This meant the Orders of Service for the hospitals annual Service of Remembrance were safely delivered to the chaplaincy in time for the event on 9th March.

Things Fairly Traided
Today I have a Fair Trade muffin recipe for you here.
On Tuesday evening after the library had closed at 19:00 (as it does Monday-Thursday) I went to the opening of a new shop  just up the road from the hospital in Broomhill. It is called Fair Grounds and during Fairtrade fortnight, which runs to March 9, the shop will be open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm. From March 11 the shop will be open Tuesday to Saturday.

Things to put in your diary

Sheffield University Medical School is holding an exhibition from June 23rd for six months describing the work of the 3rd West Riding Field Ambulance which consisted of Sheffield doctors, nursing orderlies, nurses, stretcher bearers and chaplains on the Western Front in France during the Great War. Their heroic care of the wounded will be illustrated and how the Royal Army Medical Corps ( R.A.M.C.) efficiently organised the evacuation pathways from the front line back to England in the most horrific war the world has experienced. The care of the wounded returning to Sheffield by the territorial force of the 3rd Northern General Hospital in the city’s hospitals, halls, schools and even cricket pavilions where more than 70,000 wounded soldiers were treated throughout the war will also be described.

Things romantic
Why not spoil the person in your life with this classic pasta dish Pasta Puttanesca from Delia..though possibly best not to tell them what the name means...very easy to make even for a novice.

Even simpler is this cake in a mug - 3 mins in a microwave!
