Things we don't have in the library..yet...
The Welsh Government is supporting a pilot scheme that aims to bring 3D printing to front-line NHS staff. The project is looking at how 3D photography and 3D printing could be used in areas such as burns therapy and wound-care.The project is funded by the Welsh Government Health Technology and Telehealth Fund and run by consultancy PDR, which has experience of using 3D printing in medical applications. The funding will pay for five scanners and a 3D printer. The scanners will be used to capture patient data, which will be sent to PDR where the consultancy will use it to design patient-specific devices such as prostheses or cutting and drilling guides. The aim is to enable low-cost access to 3D printing that will allow NHS staff to commission custom-fitting devices. The project is being backed by the Centre for Applied Reconstructive Technologies in Surgery in Wales. Things we do have....

Things on the hospital intranet
For SCH staff there is a new way to access clinical guidelines on the intranet. Just open the intranet front page and click on the clinical guidelines bear icon. This is located on the bottom left hand side of the intranet front page.  When you click on the icon you will be taken to a page where you can choose to access the medical and laboratory handbooks as single PDF documents or use the new Q-Pulse Clinical Guidelines search link. This will take you to a search terms form. Enter your keyword search term to identify the appropriate guideline. This may result in several guideline titles being displayed that link to your search term. Titles are hyperlinked and clicking on the most appropriate choice will take you directly to the guidelines.

Good Things
Overall Good is how Sheffield Children's Hospital was rated by the Care Quality Commission in the report published on 5th August 2014.
You can see the report here
The CQC has also published Getting it right for children & young people (including those transitioning into adult services): a report on the CQC’s new approach to inspection.  Some of the report's recommendations formed the basis of the pilot inspection of our Trust.

Things the Trust is involved in - Genes
Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust and Sheffield Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust are seeking to be a Genomic Medicine Centre. This is part of the 100,000 Genomes project aiming to provide a resource for research into the genetic basis of disease.
The Clinical Genetics department leads on research into Juvenile Huntington's disease and last week received a visit from a Belgian cyclist who is raising awareness of the disease.

Things you copy
For the next 6 weeks you will see these yellow boxes next to photocopiers in the Trust. The Copyright Licensing Agency is collecting data on what is copied so authors, artists and publishers are correctly remunerated for their work. Instructions next to the boxes will tell you what to do. There will also be a survey of what material is scanned and sent but will be undertaken by an identified number of individuals.

Things to help you
The Library's Clinical Question Answering Service
If you need help to find the evidence to write guidelines, care plans, make clinical decisions, update your knowledge,  look no further than the library.  Sarah & Gill can do free literature searches for you and send you relevant articles (small charge for these). We  have recently received positive feedback that our work significantly helped a department with their decision making.  To request a literature search fill in this form.

Friday things - FISH
This creamy tart is full of smoky fish and sweet prawns, but less heavy than the usual mash-topped pie
The recipe can be found on the BBC Good Food site here.

Things back in the library..me
Nice B & B location! ©Gill Kaye 2014
..after a lovely holiday in Kefalonia I was straight off to a 2 day conference of Health Librarians in Oxford. There were over 200 delegates from all health sectors: NHS trusts, Primary Care, Professional bodies, Charities, Universities etc. A fantastic if hectic 2 days with lots of good ideas for future service development - a couple of quotes that have stuck with me that summarise for me why our role as librarians is important
[healthcare staff need to spend] "less time finding info & knowledge and more time using it"
"Getting information off the internet is like taking a drink from a fire hydrant" [you will be swamped]

Things published
NICE have published quality standard guideline on 'Feverish illness in children under 5 years' read it here
Public Health England have published their Annual flu programme information: training slides and publicity matierial available here
