Just one day..snapshot of what we do..

Designed by Sarah McIntyre, www.jabberworks.co.uk
It’s a good start to the day as the lift goes direct to F Floor Stephenson without stopping; I do walk up the stairs in summer when the bus gets me here earlier but no time to do that today.

Kate is already in and sending out email reminders the day before books are due back, there will then be a flurry of emails to reply to granting renewals if the books haven’t been reserved by another reader.

Sarah is out at the PCCU ward round meeting as part of our clinical support work – we also attend Surgery & Neurosurgery meetings on a regular basis, she will probably come back with at least one literature search for evidence to work on during the next couple of days.

The library email accounts are checked and a collective sigh of relief goes up as (so far) there isn't a request for 17 articles by one of our regular clinicians...we are convinced he saves them all up for Friday afternoons!

A couple of support workers come into the library to ask for help logging on the the e-learning platform and after negotiating the choosing a password minefield they settle down to complete some training.

We have medical students in today too – they like working in our library as it is smaller and cosier than many of the university ones and this group seem particularly keen on our dark chocolate KitKats and cappuccino coffee.

We advertise that we can answer ‘all questions even the silly ones’ although we are momentarily flummoxed by a phone call asking if we have OED...what strange medical condition is this we wonder ....till it transpires that it is the precise definition of a word that is required and as we do have access to Oxford English Dictionary on-line we are able to help.

Someone comes to the counter asking for a particular book except that all he can remember about it is that it is on a particular topic and has a blue cover. Book is finally located (with a green cover) and reader goes away happy.

A doctor comes in for a pre-booked individual training session on how to use the Healthcare Databases Advanced Search (HDAS) this lasts for about an hour and we get through it without the system crashing which does make life easier.

Sarah is due to visit Becton in the near future to explain or services to a group of staff and how they can access electronic resources, so some time is spent working out the best mode of transport.
A group of lost staff come into the library looking for the Webster seminar room....this happens so frequently that we have written  instructions ready to give them.

Lunchtime comes at last and along with it a discussion of what cakes Sarah & Kate are going to make for the next InfoBites session (see previous blogs), Sarah also bakes regularly for the Journal Club(see previous blogs)...it’s not that we are obsessed by cake or anything..honest!

The emails are checked again and some requests from other health libraries in the UK are supplied – we have a good fast reciprocal service and can supply most article requests in a couple of days.

I spend an hour ordering new books and replacements for old editions..we shall soon be able to advertise another sale of withdrawn items.

I then walk across Weston Park to collect  some books previously ordered on our behalf by the University of Sheffield, the duck pond is frozen today and the ducks look most disgruntled. Fortunately there are only 3 small books to pick up, some of our books are very heavy.

Catch up on TweetDeck when I get back and retweet information that I think will be of interest to our followers – it will automatically appear on our Facebook and Linkedin pages too. I then add recent publications by SCH staff to our Delicious bookmarking page. I've only recently set up an alert to catch these and hopefully having them all in one place will help raise the profile of the Trust and make it easier for people to see what others are working on.

It’s one of my late nights tonight (Mon-Thurs we open till 7 pm) so I settle down to catch up with some paperwork but make the mistake of checking the library emails again and see that instead I will be searching for and supplying 17 articles

InfoBites Google

The first of our InfoBites sessions will be next Tuesday 4th December from 13:00 to 13:30 in Illingworth Library on F Floor in Stephenson Wing open to all staff.

This is not about clinical searches for evidence but just general searching that you might do in the course of your job or for leisure.

Are you swamped by results when you search, can you distinguish adverts from other results, can you use Google to do calculations or can you find a cartoon of a purple cat when you want one?  All and more will be revealed...

Cakey nibbles will be provided...bring your lunch and a drink ..or buy one from our selection. There will be a short presentation lasting 20 mins to show you some tips and tricks to get more out of Google searching and introduce you to some of the tools you might not have tried yet.

Do come along and join us.

InfoBites are nearly here...

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery they say so, after discovering ScHARR Bite Size sessions to support research and teaching at The University of Sheffield, we have decided to launch InfoBites.
 Some rights reserved by jeffreyw

Really just another excuse to eat cake!

These will be 20 minute 'taster' sessions with 10 mins for discussion/questions on subjects that we hope will be useful to all staff within SCH Trust (not just aimed at clinical staff although the subjects vary). We will be introducing tools and topics we have found useful that you may like to try.

The format will be that (technology permitting) each session will start promptly at 13:00 in the Illingworth Library on F Floor in Stephenson Wing on the first Tuesday of every month (except August).

We will provide cakey bites (free) and you are welcome to bring your lunch and drinks to consume or you can purchase one of our hot drinks.

The programme is shown below...hope we see you there.

DynaMed 3 month Trial

The Illingworth Library has facilitated a trial of DynaMed which is a resource for answering clinical questions during practice at the point of care.

DynaMed includes over 3200 clinically organized evidence based topic summaries covering all aspects of care. It is updated daily by editors who monitor the content of over 500 medical journals.  In the coming months information from the BNF and the BNFC is being added.

5th November 2012 - 5th February 2013

Access

  1. Clicking HERE or on the DynaMed button on the library webpage and using your Athens username and password to login.
  2. Clicking the DynaMed button on the Intranet - no login will be required.
  3. Via the DynaMed app. (a serial number is required which may be obtained from the library together with instructions on how to download the app. We have 20 serial numbers for use during the trial.)

Feedback

We need your feedback to decide whether this resource would be of use to clinicians in  decision making at the point of care.
Please take 5 minutes to complete a feedback survey which can be reached by clicking HERE or following the link under the DynaMed button on the Trust Intranet home page

Need to search the literature...can we help you?

For several years the Illingworth Library has provided literature search training consisting of one to one sessions lasting about 1 hour – just ring up and book. Additionally we can also do literature searches for you or alongside you. Last year we did 70+ searches particularly in our work supporting PCCU and Surgery  and we have already done over 40 this year since April.

We regularly do searches to help  inform the care of current patients; as background for developing guidelines or auditing  current practice and also to help staff undertaking further study. We have done searches for Allied Health Professionals, Consultants, Nurses, Scientists and many others. We have searched for topics ranging from Appendectomies to Mouthwashes. We start with the Health Databases available via NHS Evidence and then widen the search to look at other resources as necessary.

We encourage people to learn how to search effectively for themselves but as we are conducting searches regularly it may sometimes be more efficient to use our service.  So if you are short of time or your skills are rusty perhaps we can help.

Some excellent feedback we had recently puts the case perfectly

“I had 2 clinical questions recently that no textbook was giving me an easy answer to and after a quick email within a few working days I had both an extensive literature search and downloaded articles that perfectly answered my queries.

When I first started I almost felt that asking their help was both lazy and an imposition; this could not be further from the point. So, at the risk of overwhelming them .... get in touch. I'm sure they can be of help.”

Sometimes people will do a search themselves and then ask us to do the same search – this can be useful both to confirm that they haven’t missed anything but also as we all have our own ways of approaching a search we might sometimes pick up different results.

There is more information and a link to a search request form here http://www.sheffieldchildrens.nhs.uk/Literaturesearching

There is no charge for the literature searching service but you will be asked to spend a couple of minutes filling in an online feedback form 4-6 weeks after the search to help us keep our service relevant and useful.
