Things in the library 20th Oct...

Happy Diwali to those celebrating this week

Things about young people...
Just published is the report on  'Key Data on young people 2017: Latest information and statistics' by the association for young people's health. One of their central aims is to promote evidence-based practice by making research findings more accessible. By sharing learning and best practice they aim to promote and provide better services to meet young people’s particular health needs.

Things about re-validation for nurses...
If you want to see all the resources we think would be useful for you if you are re-validating then just type 'revalidation' into the search box on our library catalogue or click this link. If you find any other resources that are useful let us know and we will see if we can add them to our collection

Things to make your own...
Anyone can search our library catalogue on the internet but if you log in with your library ticket number and a PIN (available on request), then you can improve the functionality. You will be able to renew and reserve books on line, create and email resource lists of useful items and leave reviews for other users. Having a PIN also means you can download the App Android  or Apple for managing your library account from your smart phone.

Things to make...
Halwa/Halva is a very popular sweet dish usually made for special occasions such as Diwali. This version uses pumpkins so you can eat this to celebrate Diwali but also make use of the inside of a pumpkin if you are celebrating Halloween at the end of the month!

Things a little spooky...
This is an opportunity to remind you that our next Reading Group meeting is on 1st Nov and we will be discussing 'The Graveyard Book'

Two studies appearing in the August 23/30 issue of JAMA examine the use of genetic tests to help rule out a serious bacterial infection in infants with fever, and also to determine if an infection is bacterial or viral in children with fever. Read more about them here.

Things for a last picnic...
We have an annual family gathering on Sunday which will hopefully not be a wet picnic. We travel from as far afield as Sheffield, Tunbridge Wells and Truro and meet somewhere in the middle. The ages range from 1 to 85 and it is a great chance to catch up. Not yet decided what I am making but may get some inspiration here

Thing in the library 24 June

Things exciting...please come
The library mini-refurbishment is now complete and we would like to invite you to come and
celebrate our "new look". The barriers and the Victorian banking hall have gone and the library is much more open, light and airy. It is also an Aladdin's cave of services relevant and available to all staff. To meet the library staff and discover what we do, find out what our plans are to help provide care and treatment of the highest standard, admire the view from our windows which could be yours when you use our facilities and find out why Journal Club is nicknamed "Muffin Club"... come along to the Library, F Floor, on Grey Lifts, 11.30am to 2.30pm on Tuesday 28 June.

Royal College of NursingThings published...

More things about e-books...
Image result for ebook centralLast week I told you about the Oxford online books now available via our library catalogue. You may remember before Christmas we did a trial of the Proquest EBook Central library. We have decided to dedicate a small amount of money to buying some extra e-books. There is a vast collection (20,000) available; you can browse an individual books for 5 mins before needing to request a purchase so if you are just wanting to check some information that may be sufficient time. If you see something that you think would be useful for a longer period then you can request that we purchase it and then you will be able to borrow it for a set period of time. We have limited money so will only be buying e-books that will be of greatest use to as many people as possible. We will reply to your request as soon as possible. Books that we purchase will be added to our normal catalogue but to see the whole collection you will need to login in here with your NHS OpenAthens account.

Things about nursing re-validation...
Revalidation: Nursing Demands Evidence Webinar 21st July 2016, 3-4pm. You may like to attend a short webinar, which looks at the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) themes and demonstrates how The Royal Marsden Manual of Clinical Nursing Procedures (9th edition)  supports each theme of the code. The webinar covers individual case studies and scenarios supporting each aspect of the code. Presenters include the editors of The Royal Marsden Manual of Clinical Nursing Procedures, sharing their many years of practical experience in nursing, and they are supported by case studies given by librarians working with NHS practitioners. This presentation provides invaluable information and suggestions for all nurses engaged with re-validation.

Something to eat...
Not sure if it will be barbecue weather or not this weekend but this is a slow cooking dish that is fabulous and works for outdoor or indoor eating. We cooked it last weekend and served with cous cous and various salads. Finding unsweetened pomegranate juice rather than the drink was a bit of a challenge (eventually found it in Waitrose) and quite pricey so I used a combination of both which worked well).
