Things read 
Over Christmas I managed to find time to read 'The Help' by Kathryn Stockett published in 2009. Some of you may have seen the film but if you want to read the book we have a copy available for loan in the library.
The book is set in Mississippi in 1962 and is about the lives of the the black maids employed by the white families - trusted to raise the white children yet segregated  in so many ways and not trusted with the family silver. The intertwining of these two worlds: the home lives of the maids and those of the 'ladies who lunch' at a time of political change and racial tension is in turn horrific, hilarious and often moving. A friendship develops between a white college girl trying to find out what happened to the black maid who raised her and two of the maids who trust her and want to tell their stories.
The characters are brilliantly described and there are those on both sides that you feel empathy with and the courage they have to show crossing boundaries is clearly described. The food and weather of the southern states are a running theme throughout the book adding to the atmosphere and drawing you into this world. An extraordinary story which I couldn't put down it had me in turn laughing out loud and despairing of man's (and women's) lack of tolerance and understanding of others.

Things theatrical 
Do you know about the library theatre...no not us..the Central Sheffield Library. Hidden away on Tudor Square next to the Lyceum. They have just released the next season's programme




Things about medical education

The GMC are consulting about standards for medical education and training and would like to hear your views on their draft proposals. They are asking medical students, doctors in training, trainers, teachers, as well as the organisations that educate and train medical students and doctors, for their views on the proposed standards. Anyone who is interested in medical education and training can respond to the consultation. Take part here

Things in the Library 7th February

Things to join, use and love
Tomorrow is National Libraries Day so although we are closed at weekends we do encourage you to go along and use and support your local library - many of which will be hosting special events - in Sheffield here.
Don't forget we are here as a library for all staff at Sheffield Children's Hospital we can support your clinical work, studies and also provide leisure reading. Check our our full range of services here and don't forget you don't have to physically come to the library as the library is a Service not just a Place.


Things at Ryegate
An example of us being out-and-about is that Kate held a Library Clinic up at Ryegate on Tuesday. She was able to help people with queries about e-learning, e-mail, literature searching, accessing full-text journals and registering for Athens accounts - if you don't yet have an NHS OpenAthens account register here. The next Ryegate Library Clinic is planned for Wed 2nd April 13.00-15.00.

Things to be aware of
Tuesday 11th Feb is Safer Internet Day and as people working with and caring for children there are many issues we should all be aware of and educate ourselves and others about. The day offers the opportunity to focus on both the creative things that children and young people are doing online, as well as the role and responsibility that all stakeholders have in helping to create a better internet. Lots of information, a quiz and details of events here

Things useful
The Mental Health Foundation have published an information pack which is free to download here. This pack is intended to provide a basic introduction to mental well-being and mental health problems before considering mental health problems in children and young people with learning disabilities in more depth.

This introduction to the subject is supported by a range of different resources that may be useful for all those working with children and young people with learning disabilities, including details of different programmes that support mental health, as well as practical resources that can be used to support children.

Tuesday 11th 17:30 to 18:30 Introduction to next season of Journal Club - chance to find out what goes on, pick up a handbook and perhaps sign up to present a paper..and of course sample the muffins

Things to make

Still the weather for comforting casseroles in our house but a very quick and tasty one here that is easy, healthy and a bit different - I'll be making it again this weekend - Italian-style beef stew
