Things to attend...

Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is an annual observance on November 20th when trans and gender-diverse people, whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence in the past 12 months, are remembered and honoured. It is an opportunity to come together with our communities and grieve collectively. Organised by local LGBT+ youth group SAYit and Sheffield LGBT+ events. At Hallam Square 5.30 - 6.30pm. All SCH Rainbow Badge wearers and supporters are invited to attend.

Things about sepsis...
You may have seen in the news this week mention of a new test for sepsis in children. Whenever you hear or read a news story and want to know more about it...and if it is true.. the best place to go is the NHS Behind the headlines site. Here you can read their opinion of the news story and what the actual research says that is behind it. In this case they conclude:

"This study is the first for many years to make some progress in our understanding of sepsis. It opens up possibilities for research into potential drugs that could be used in the future. This study also suggests ways in which the Persevere II test could be used to identify people at high risk of life-threatening sepsis, so they can be treated quickly and with the most appropriate dose of antibiotics.
However, this is very early-stage research. Just because a treatment works for mice does not mean it will work for humans. Translating results from a species to another, as the researchers do in this study, does not always work. Higher-dose antibiotics have not been tested for children identified as at high risk of life-threatening sepsis. Higher than usual doses could have damaging effects.
The Persevere II test is still being worked on, so is not yet generally available for doctors to use. In a media interview, a researcher said it is about 2 years away from being made available."

Things to visit...

Did you know the University has a small museum (Alfred Denny Museum of Zoology) which is usually open for guided tours at 10 am, 11 am and 12 pm on the first Saturday of each month . There are only 25 places per tour so it is recommended that you book early. Next date is 7th December. High quality specimens from across the globe from all major phyla including fossils and material of extinct animals, which demonstrate the diversity of animal life on earth. The displays include a large spirit collection (animals stored in alcohol) and fully articulated skeletons of a wide range of vertebrates.

Things about full-text articles...
In order to access most full-text articles you will need an NHS Athens account which is free and easy to set up. This will give you access to certain key resources and journals. If a journal you want isn't listed as available via this route then fill in our Article request form and we can get most things for you within a couple of days. There is a small charge for this, max £3 for each article but often a lot less as the charge is 15p per page. If you are involved in teaching University of Sheffield students you can apply for Honorary status with the University which then gives you access to their electronic journal holdings without charge.

Things to make...
In preparation for Christmas now would be a good time to make Delia's  mincemeat - it is easy to buy but also easy to make - use vegetarian suet if you prefer. Or if you get the ingredients now you can make it on 24th November known as Stir-up Sunday the traditional day for making Christmas puddings.

Things out of the library...
Sarah will be away for the next 3 weeks (I'm sure she has probably told you all about it as she is very excited!). Please do not send her any unnecessary emails whilst she is away as she might never get through them all on her return (and then need another holiday). Instead please email the library and whoever is on duty (Gill or Kate) will deal with your request or send them on to Sarah on her return if necessary.



Things newly available...
There is currently trial access of 270 SAGE Health Sciences journals  - this will run until January 2017. You can access this via your NHS OpenAthens account.


Things about FGM reporting...
Viv Bennett, Chief Nurse of Public Health England, blogs about the first year of mandatory reporting for female genital mutilation (FGM) and the role of school nurses and health visitors in identifying and safeguarding girls who are at risk. She outlines the criteria for mandatory reporting, explains the requirements for professionals and highlights the importance of professionals having the confidence to ask the necessary questions.




Things about infantile colic...

Recent Cochrane Review aims to assess the effectiveness and safety of pain-relieving agents for reducing colic in infants younger than four months of age. The Authors conclude: "At the present time, evidence of the effectiveness of pain-relieving agents for the treatment of infantile colic is sparse and prone to bias. The few available studies included small sample sizes, and most had serious limitations. Benefits, when reported, were inconsistent. We found no evidence to support the use of simethicone as a pain-relieving agent for infantile colic. Available evidence shows that herbal agents, sugar, dicyclomine and cimetropium bromide cannot be recommended for infants with colic."

Things about Diabetes updated...
The NICE guideline [NG18] 'Diabetes (type 1 and type 2) in children and young people: diagnosis and management' was updated this month. Recommendations 1.2.115 and 1.3.52 were amended to add information on when eye screening should begin and referral for eye screening should happen.

Things to see...
Go and see the restored Western Bank Library Exhibition Gallery! Thanks to a generous grant from the Wolfson Foundation, a major bequest from a former graduate and many smaller donations to the University's Alumni Foundation, this attractive space has been restored to the condition it was in when the Grade II listed building opened in 1959, and upgraded with 21st century systems. the latest exhibition just opened is 'Spectacle and Wonder: The Circus Friends Association Archive' 





Things autumnal...

Things about e-books... 
We now have access to 130 Oxford handbooks and textbooks as e-books on a wide range of topics  - you will find them by searching in our library catalogue then by clicking the "Read Me" button to gain access. You will be able to read them by logging in with your NHS OpenAthens account, it is also possible to download chapters.

Once logged in with NHS OpenAthens you can also search the Oxford Medicine Online site by specialty, career stage and book series - then if you select Unlocked and Free  in the filter section (see left) you can see what is available to you. Or you can browse the books available to you. If you need an OpenAthens account login join up here for free if you work for SCH.

Things to come to in the library...
Next week's journal club is on Thursday morning 23 June between 8:00 - 9:00 am. The paper to be presented and discussed is " Is screening for urine infection in well infants with prolonged jaundice required? Things about NHS leadership...

Marcus Powell joined The King’s Fund earlier this year as Director of Leadership and Organisational Development, having spent his whole career outside the NHS in the private sector. He has written a paper entitled 'Leadership in the NHS :Thoughts of a newcomer' which makes interesting reading.

Things about care models...
NHS confederation have just published "New care models and staff engagement: All aboard" This publication brings together the experiences of four vanguards which are placing staff at the centre of new care models. The vanguards featured recognise that those on the front line of care have the best ideas about how to improve it – but need to feel empowered to do so.

Things about child development... 
The Department of Health is developing an outcome measure of child development at age 2 – 2½ years, the data for which will be published in the Public Health Outcomes Framework from 2017. They have published a factsheet aimed at health visitors on 'Developing a public health outcome measure for children aged 2 – 2½ using ASQ-3 ' it contains many links to further information.

Things digital...
Do you need to increase your confidence and skills when online?  take a look at this free Open University course 'Succeeding in a digital world'. It explores a range of digital skills and practices, including digital identity, digital well-being, staying safe and legal, finding and using information and online tools, and dealing with information overload. The importance of developing a critical approach to life online is emphasised throughout, whether consuming or creating information. You'll be encouraged to reflect on your own situation and to apply what you learn to real-life scenarios, using a digital skills plan to keep a record of progress.

This week I managed to pick a sunny day to walk across Western Park three times to pick up some books we have newly purchased. One of them is the new edition of Great Ormond Street  'Handbook of Paediatrics'. It will be available to borrow soon..please contact us if you wish to reserve it. In honour of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death why not try making these Shrewsbury cakes/biscuits which are believed to be what were referred to in Twelfth Night

Sir Toby’s cakes, most historians agree, were most likely Shrewsbury cakes, which were essentially shortbread cookies, flavored with rosewater, nutmeg, or cinnamon. In the play, the prime spice seems to have been ginger, which made them “hot in the mouth.”

Things about viral bronchiolitis in children...

This article was published on 7 Jan in New England Journal of Medicine. This review on bronchiolitis in young children considers the viruses involved, the current understanding of pathogenesis, host genetic factors and the environment, and the role of season, race, and sex on attack rates and subsequent episodes of wheezing. Things to help you search Google ...

There are some excellent tips in this article if you want to be a power searcher in Google...and don't forget Google Scholar as a search tool too. However if you want help doing a 'proper' clinical search you need to search the medical databases - if you need training on how to do this then contact us to arrange a one-to-one session.

Things about traveller health...

A report by the Traveller Movement which was commissioned and published by the National Inclusion Health Board  on the Impact of insecure accommodation and the living environment on Gypsies’ and Travellers’ health. The report found that:

• two-thirds of Gypsies and Travellers reported poor, bad, very bad or health
• the living conditions of Gypsies and Travellers significantly contribute to their physical and mental health
• the poor health of Gypsies and Travellers is made worse by their living environment, accommodation insecurity and community discrimination
• there needs to be closer partnership working across health and other interests to address these issues

Things in the library 13th Nov

Things about BNF for children
Concerns have been raised as it has come to light that there are a significant number of errors contained in the recently issued BNF-c 2015/16 books. Sheffield Children's hospital is part of a nationally co-ordinated response to the editors regarding these issues. Whilst awaiting national guidance SCH staff are directed to use the more regularly updated electronic version in preference. It is available on SCH intranet and internet however to access via the mobile app you need to use your NHS Open Athens login. Please ask the library if you need help with this.


Things about mental health outcomes for children
The King's Fund and Young Minds ran an event in October on "Improving mental health outcomes for children and young people: How do we really transform services?" You can now see on-line the speeches and breakout sessions: Pathways Project - delivering interventions to young adults involved with the criminal justice system; Exploring some of the opportunities and challenges within transformation planning and implementation; Update on Tier 4; Implementing a liaison model; Case study- implementing the recommendations of the Tier 4 review; Reducing waiting times.

Things about signs
As part of a hospital project to improve signage we now have a much clearer and obvious entrance - so when you come out of the lifts of F Floor in Stephenson Wing and turn left this is what you will see. We are also revamping our library logo and leaflets - our new logo is already starting to appear. More about this in a future blog.
Things closed ....US 
Tuesday 17th November the library will be closed all day. The whole team will be attending a Yorkshire & Humberside Library & Knowledge Services networking event in Leeds. Sorry we won't be around but if you need to return books they can be left in the book drop box outside the library. Any email/messages we will deal with on Wednesday.

Things purple
Sheffield will go purple once again this year to show its support for World Prematurity Day on November 17. Barkers Pool, along with the lights and fountains of the Peace Garden, will join other monuments around the world - including the Eiffel Tower and Niagara Falls - as they light up purple next Tuesday, to raise awareness of preterm birth. At the Peace Gardens between 16:00 and 18:00 the lights will be turned to purple. The celebrations are going to be attended by the Frozen Princesses and there will be performances from Voices of Jessop Wing. National Grid have also got involved this year and will be lighting up their Sheffield office buildings purple on the day.

Things about being human
The University of Sheffield has several events aimed particularly at children & young people as part of the Being Human Festival. This weekend there are workshops on Stained glass, animation & poetry and next week Cyber-worlds and robots. Events for adults too such as 'Intoxicants in the Sheffield Tap' 19th Nov a night in the pub with Dr Angela McShane (V&A) and Lucie Skeaping, musician and presenter of Radio 3’s Early Music Show, to explore drinking in history and song from the 16th-19th centuries. Charge your glasses ready for an evening of ballads and insight into past drinking cultures.



Things about a phantom noise in Stephenson wing
All this week the library staff have been hearing a noise which sounds like a washing machine starting its spin cycle...regularly...every few minutes...do let us know if you know what it is. If anyone has started taking in laundry and is also offering an ironing service we would love to know!

Things to relish
Henderson's Relish, known locally as Hendo's, is the essence of Sheffield. Join Sheffield University Management School to hear all about the fascinating journey of this iconic Sheffield brand from 1882 to present day. The talk will be followed by a Q&A session. Henry Henderson first began manufacturing his own special type of sauce back in the latter part of the 19th century. Originally manufactured at Broad Lane in Sheffield, Henderson's Relish is still being made and was in uninterrupted production within half a mile of the site from which the first bottle was filled, until the move to a new food production factory in 2013.

Things to make
Sarah can recommend this vegetarian recipe that she will be making again this weekend. Veggie spiral pie with spiced tomato sauce & chopped salad.  Anything containing spinach and feta cheese sounds good to me! Wonder if Henderson's Relish goes with that?!!
