Things exciting...please come
The library mini-refurbishment is now complete and we would like to invite you to come and
celebrate our "new look". The barriers and the Victorian banking hall have gone and the library is much more open, light and airy. It is also an Aladdin's cave of services relevant and available to all staff. To meet the library staff and discover what we do, find out what our plans are to help provide care and treatment of the highest standard, admire the view from our windows which could be yours when you use our facilities and find out why Journal Club is nicknamed "Muffin Club"... come along to the Library, F Floor, on Grey Lifts, 11.30am to 2.30pm on Tuesday 28 June.

Things published...
The RCN have published a briefing document 'Inequalities experienced by children across the UK : accessing the right care, at the right time, in the right place' .This publication highlights how the health care inequalities experienced by children are influenced by getting the right care at the right time and in the right place. It sets out the current policy context across the UK, spotlights some key areas and concludes with recommendations on the actions needed by all governments across the UK.


More things about e-books...
Last week I told you about the Oxford online books now available via our library catalogue. You may remember before Christmas we did a trial of the Proquest EBook Central library. We have decided to dedicate a small amount of money to buying some extra e-books. There is a vast collection (20,000) available; you can browse an individual books for 5 mins before needing to request a purchase so if you are just wanting to check some information that may be sufficient time. If you see something that you think would be useful for a longer period then you can request that we purchase it and then you will be able to borrow it for a set period of time. We have limited money so will only be buying e-books that will be of greatest use to as many people as possible. We will reply to your request as soon as possible. Books that we purchase will be added to our normal catalogue but to see the whole collection you will need to login in here with your NHS OpenAthens account.

Things about nursing re-validation...
Revalidation: Nursing Demands Evidence Webinar 21st July 2016, 3-4pm. You may like to attend a short webinar, which looks at the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) themes and demonstrates how The Royal Marsden Manual of Clinical Nursing Procedures (9th edition)  supports each theme of the code. The webinar covers individual case studies and scenarios supporting each aspect of the code. Presenters include the editors of The Royal Marsden Manual of Clinical Nursing Procedures, sharing their many years of practical experience in nursing, and they are supported by case studies given by librarians working with NHS practitioners. This presentation provides invaluable information and suggestions for all nurses engaged with re-validation.

Something to eat...
Not sure if it will be barbecue weather or not this weekend but this is a slow cooking dish that is fabulous and works for outdoor or indoor eating. We cooked it last weekend and served with cous cous and various salads. Finding unsweetened pomegranate juice rather than the drink was a bit of a challenge (eventually found it in Waitrose) and quite pricey so I used a combination of both which worked well).

Things 22 years ago...

We realised this morning that today is the 22nd birthday of the Illingworth library as we know it. We were officially opened by Dr Cynthia Illingworth who was the widow of Professer Ronald Illingworth after whom we are named. The library grew from a collection of books that he originally donated - he was the first University of Sheffield Professor of Child Health. When Ronald Ilingworth arrived at the Children’s Hospital in 1946, it was largely run by visiting GPs; by the time he left, almost 30 years later, it was a centre of excellence with an international reputation. From his department he nurtured a steady stream of promising paediatricians who came from all over the world to work with him. He enlarged and transformed the Children’s Hospital and, in an age when a patient was routinely isolated from their family, pioneered a humane visiting regime, allowing parents to stay with their children and creating the facilities to allow them to do so. On a personal note my mother worked with him here in the 1950s.

It seems rather appropriate that when workmen took down an old sign outside the library this week we found the even older original sign underneath.

If you use Twitter for your personal development amongst your peers you may like to join in the regular twitter chats that take place for a variety of professions. Find out more here. They say about themselves " All of the chats on this website are run by healthcare professionals who believe passionately that through connecting people and sharing information ideas and expertise we can share best practice and ultimately provide better care. We all give our time voluntarily to host Twitter chats as we can see that through better connections and sharing comes better care. We like to share the good stuff!! Although the chats may be predominantly aimed one group of healthcare professionals (eg WeNurses is aimed at nurses) all of the chats promote an “everyone is welcome and adds value” approach to tweeting, connecting and learning with patients offering a great value too when tweeting alongside healthcare professionals."

Have you checked out the BMJ's Evidence-Based medicine Journal? Some of the articles are Open Access so freely available like this one spotted this week 'Autoinflation reduces middle ear effusion in children with otitis media with effusion' an RCT.

Things to go with your Easter roast...

Kate is thinking of trying this out on Sunday - it certainly sounds lovely Crispy layered thyme potatoes and unusual in layering the potatoes on their edges - so no fighting over who gets the nice crispy top edge that way....or is that just in my house!

Thing in the library 12 Feb 2016

Starting point

Well thing are all over the place in the library this week...
If you have been following our Facebook posts you will have seen a transformation under way. Last Friday we were covered in blue plastic, had wood and asbestos ripped out over the weekend which revealed some very dirty walls and radiators and have now been painted and re-carpeted. Also our old counter area has been removed and we have a temporary entrance and counter area in the computer room. By the end of next week we hope we will be getting back to normal. Please excuse our dishevelled state in the mean time but we are open.

Things for finding evidence...

We have mentioned TRIP Database before and recommend it as an additional search tool. We have heard this week that for a pilot period of one year, HEE has negotiated access to the Premium version of the TRIP database. The site is also due to be redesigned in 4-6 weeks but try it out from an NHS computer to get full access. If you then set up a personal TRIP account clinicians should be able to use the premium version elsewhere too.

Things about Child Services

The Nuffield Trust issued a briefing document this week 'The future of

child health services: new models of care'. The briefing is based on a 2015 Nuffield Trust workshop that brought together frontline clinicians, service users, commissioners, representatives from new care models and a range of other stakeholders. The briefing draws on presentations, discussions and

materials submitted by delegates at the workshop, and other published literature.

Things introducing Journal Club 

The next session will be on Thursday 18th Feb 8:00 to 9:00 in the Education & Skills Centre on F Floor Stephenson Wing. If you don't know what happens at a journal club and have always been too afraid to ask then this session is for you! Come along and find out more and sample the home-made muffins that are a regular feature.
