Things in the library 4th August...

Things new...
Blog going out a bit late today as I have been putting lots of lovely new books out on the shelves. See them here  . You can always make suggestions of new books that you think we should buy and if you have found a book particularly useful (or not) why not rate it on our catalogue and leave a comment for other users. You can also make suggestions of e-books you would like us to purchase by logging on to the e-book platform with your NHS Open Athens account

More new things...
Lots of new staff arriving this week - we look forward to helping you in any ways we can whilst you are here. If you need anything relating to information or organisation skills we are your people.

Things about juvenile mood disorders...
Suicide attempts are prevalent in association with major mood disorders, and risk is greater with bipolar disorder (BD) than major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. There may be similar relationships in juvenile mood disorders, but the evidence has not been compiled systematically and quantitatively. Article published in JAA Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

Things about wellbeing...
Independent high quality evidence on what organisations – Governments, Charities, Businesses – can do to improve wellbeing is available here.

Things about undernourishment of children in England...
The Patients Association has issued a report suggesting that under-nutrition among children is not confined to the developing world, but is a problem in Britain today.
The project was undertaken by the Patients Association and funded by a non-restricted education grant from Abbott. A cross-section of health and care staff in four sites – Bradford, Cornwall, Tower Hamlets and Birmingham – were interviewed. Parents were also interviewed in Bradford and Cornwall. The findings reveal examples of positive efforts in working with children and families across agencies, particularly by public health teams, community and acute health staff; but many are overstretched and unable to meet demand for the types of information and guidance that people need. The report’s recommendations include:

  • Awareness of under-nutrition should be raised among both professionals and the public
  • New and existing training and guidance for professionals should include the identification and treatment of under-nutrition
  • National guidance and a care pathway should be developed specifically for undernutrition.
Things improved...
New improved BNF and BNFC app has been launched.
The publishers of the British National Formulary (BNF) and British National Formulary for Children (BNFC) have released a new, faster, easier to use and access app.
The new app has been purpose built for iOS and Android platforms. This has enabled an intuitive design and enhanced features around search, interactions checking and updating mechanisms.
For the first time adult and child BNF content is available through a single app, providing ease of use and saving space on users’ devices.

The new app is fully portable and users don’t need to be connected to the internet to access it; this means the BNF and BNFC’s authoritative guidance is readily available at the point of care in a digital format to suit the needs of health and social care professionals.

Things to read...
We had an enjoyable time at Reading Group this week discussing our last book. The next meeting is at 17:15 on Wed 6th Sept and the book we will be discussing then is Lion: a long way home by Saroo Brierley. Do come and join us.

Things to attend...

Did you know Sheffield is hosting the Special Olympics between 7 - 12 August? Tickets are now on sale for the opening ceremony. We attended this in 1993 and it was great. However the previous night I had spent in Sheffield Children's where son number 1 was having a Lego brick he had inhaled removed....sigh.  PS If the junior doctor who was on duty when we first brought him in ...and didn't believe us......is now an esteemed consultant...do come and have a word...!

Things to eat...

For the Reading Group this week I made some Buttermilk biscuits from the recipe in the book we were reading. The recipe below is similar and one I have made before...great with chowder.

Things about non-specialist children's care
This guidance, produced by the Children’s Surgical Forum (CSF) – which is comprised of surgeons, anaesthetists, other medical specialists and lay representatives – combines a large number of standards and guidelines provided by key stakeholders involved in surgical care of children and young people (CAYP) and is intended to improve emergency surgical care for children and young people in all parts of the UK.
Topics covered include: pre-hospital care, networks, locally delivered care, collaboration between paediatric and surgical services, transfers, education and training, and patients and their families.
The publication will be of most interest to clinicians and service managers in hospitals that admit children and young people (both specialist and non specialist), and network leads and commissioners with particular responsibility for the care of CAYP.

Things in the library 13th Nov

Image result for bnf for childrenThings about BNF for children
Concerns have been raised as it has come to light that there are a significant number of errors contained in the recently issued BNF-c 2015/16 books. Sheffield Children's hospital is part of a nationally co-ordinated response to the editors regarding these issues. Whilst awaiting national guidance SCH staff are directed to use the more regularly updated electronic version in preference. It is available on SCH intranet and internet however to access via the mobile app you need to use your NHS Open Athens login. Please ask the library if you need help with this.

Things about mental health outcomes for children
The King's Fund and Young Minds ran an event in October on "Improving mental health outcomes for children and young people: How do we really transform services?" You can now see on-line the speeches and breakout sessions: Pathways Project - delivering interventions to young adults involved with the criminal justice system; Exploring some of the opportunities and challenges within transformation planning and implementation; Update on Tier 4; Implementing a liaison model; Case study- implementing the recommendations of the Tier 4 review; Reducing waiting times.

Things about signs
As part of a hospital project to improve signage we now have a much clearer and obvious entrance - so when you come out of the lifts of F Floor in Stephenson Wing and turn left this is what you will see. We are also revamping our library logo and leaflets - our new logo is already starting to appear. More about this in a future blog.
Things closed ....US
Tuesday 17th November the library will be closed all day. The whole team will be attending a Yorkshire & Humberside Library & Knowledge Services networking event in Leeds. Sorry we won't be around but if you need to return books they can be left in the book drop box outside the library. Any email/messages we will deal with on Wednesday.

Things purple
Image result for World Prematurity Day sheffieldSheffield will go purple once again this year to show its support for World Prematurity Day on November 17. Barkers Pool, along with the lights and fountains of the Peace Garden, will join other monuments around the world - including the Eiffel Tower and Niagara Falls - as they light up purple next Tuesday, to raise awareness of preterm birth. At the Peace Gardens between 16:00 and 18:00 the lights will be turned to purple. The celebrations are going to be attended by the Frozen Princesses and there will be performances from Voices of Jessop Wing. National Grid have also got involved this year and will be lighting up their Sheffield office buildings purple on the day.

Things about being human

Charge your glasses ready for an evening of ballads and insight into past drinking cultures.

Things about a phantom noise in Stephenson wing
Image result for washing lineAll this week the library staff have been hearing a noise which sounds like a washing machine starting its spin cycle...regularly...every few minutes...do let us know if you know what it is. If anyone has started taking in laundry and is also offering an ironing service we would love to know!

Things to relish
hendersonsHenderson's Relish, known locally as Hendo's, is the essence of Sheffield. Join Sheffield University Management School to hear all about the fascinating journey of this iconic Sheffield brand from 1882 to present day. The talk will be followed by a Q&A session. Henry Henderson first began manufacturing his own special type of sauce back in the latter part of the 19th century. Originally manufactured at Broad Lane in Sheffield, Henderson's Relish is still being made and was in uninterrupted production within half a mile of the site from which the first bottle was filled, until the move to a new food production factory in 2013.

Things to make
Veggie spiral pie with spiced tomato sauce & chopped saladSarah can recommend this vegetarian recipe that she will be making again this weekend. Veggie spiral pie with spiced tomato sauce & chopped salad.  Anything containing spinach and feta cheese sounds good to me! Wonder if Henderson's Relish goes with that?!!
