Things in the Library - November

 Toddler development checks

The National Institute for Health & Care Research have found that about 1 in 4 children are missing their 2-2.5 year development checks. Children from deprived backgrounds, and those in local authority care, were less likely than other children to have these checks recorded. The Healthy Child Programme in England states that all children aged 2-2½ should have a health check by the health visiting team. Not all children receive these checks, and, before this study, it was not known whether certain groups are more likely to miss out.

Protecting children online

Ofcom has published a report looking at the measures taken by video sharing platforms to protect children and ensure that they do not view adult material including pornography. The report found that most UK sites do not have robust verification methods in place, and many sites merely require the user to check a box stating that they are 18 or over.

NSPCC Learning has created an e-learning course to help designated child protection leads understand the risks around children sharing nude images and how to respond appropriately. The course includes training on recognising when sharing imagery is harmful sexual behaviour, and steps to safeguard all young people involved.

Workforce Census 2022

The Royal College of Paediatrics & Child Health has published an overview of paediatric and child health workforce, focusing on consultants and SAS doctors working in the UK. It includes recommendations and key findings graphics.

Childhood obesity

From the Nuffield Trust:Despite numerous initiatives, there have been no improvements in the levels of childhood excess weight and obesity in England over recent years. Much of the research used to inform policy on childhood obesity has been based on ways of changing the behaviour of individuals rather than influences outside their control, like the characteristics of a local area. Understanding these external factors is particularly important for children, who cannot choose the environment they grow up in.

A Million & Me

Centre for Mental Health have released a report into A Million & Me, which  was developed by BBC Children in Need to explore how ordinary, trusted relationships can help children who are beginning to struggle with their mental wellbeing. Funded projects include including text and phone support for children, the production of digital resources and training for trusted adults, and activities aimed at boosting children’s wellbeing.

Things about training doctors
The BMA defines 'core principles' of training for doctors. The six key principles set out in the document were formulated following consultation with BMA members, as well as being informed by existing policy, and include that education, training and development is:
  • Responsive to the population’s health requirements
  • Rooted in an ethos of professional excellence
  • An inspiring process of continuous life-long learning
  • Fair and inclusive
  • Supportive and flexible for learners and trainees
  • Designed to enable employers and infrastructure to provide value and support.
Things about children's mental wellbeing
A new resource from Public Health England’s (PHE) Mental Health Intelligence Network highlights the importance of local organisations measuring and acting to improve the mental wellbeing of children and young people. Measuring mental wellbeing in children and young people shows that raising levels of mental wellbeing influences a child’s ability to learn, their resilience to risky behaviours and their physical and mental health in adulthood. Half of all mental health problems emerge before the age of 14 and 1 in 10 children will have a clinically diagnosed mental health problem during their childhood.

Following the showing of the film, there will then be a short talk from a philosopher, and then general discussion. October Session : Babette's Feast introduced by Hugh Pyper Thursday 29 October 6pm. EpilepsyPassportwebsitebanner.gifThings for a child with epilepsy
An epilepsy passport has been developed by Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health aimed at improving communication between professionals & keeping children and young people out of hospital. The passport is designed to be carried by a child with epilepsy to provide healthcare professionals with easily accessible and up-to-date information on their condition in the event of an emergency. In addition, it will mean that parents do not need to repeat their child’s epilepsy history at each medical visit a major frustration for parents.

Things about mental health
The Department for Education (DfE) has announced the appointment of a mental health champion for schools in England. Natasha Devon's role will involve raising awareness of and reducing stigma around mental health issues.

Things published
Simply by growing up in a certain part of England a child under five is more likely to have poor health that will impact the rest of their lives. The first five years of a child's life are critical to their future development. The NCB report 'Poor Beginnings: Health Inequalities among young children across England' is based on official data published by Public Health England. It looks at four key measures of young children's health and well-being - obesity, tooth decay, accidental injury and 'school readiness'. The report  provides a clear picture of the health of children under five years old living in England and shows how growing up in different areas of the country has a dramatic effect on their lives.

Inactive things

The Generation Inactive report is an analysis of the UK's childhood inactivity epidemic and tangible solutions to get children moving.
In response to the report, Prof Russell Viner from the RCPCH said
“At a time where children should be at their most active, it’s concerning that half of seven year olds are not doing the recommended one hour of physical activity that’s advised each day – the Generation Inactive report is a welcome reminder that more must be done to improve the health of our nation’s children.   The report can be read here

Things branded as healthy
"Healthy snacks could do more harm than good" say researchers from universities in Munich & Pennsylvania.
This research was a series of randomised controlled trials to investigate the effect of fitness branding on restrained eaters’ food consumption and post-consumption exercise.
The report showed that while some may have restrained from eating, say, 500 calories in the shape of crisps, they could then end up consuming a similar amount in muesli. Read about this on NHS Choices

Protective things for summer
Do you know your UVB from your UVA and what exactly is SPF?A Royal Pharmaceutical Society survey into sunscreen use has revealed a worrying lack of understanding about the degree of sun protection different products provide.
In particular, many are unaware that the SPF rating alone displayed in sunscreen labelling does not guarantee good all round protection from potential sun damage. see here for an explanation
