Things in and around the library

Opening hours - advanced warning that there will be some disruption coming up as Gill is away on holiday. We will be closed for the next 2  Monday and Wednesday evenings.
The library will be closed all day on friday 10th July

Critical Appraisal Course
This excellent course will be running on 2 July 9.30 - 13:00  in Education and Skills Centre, F Floor Stephenson Wing for SCH staff. We are often asked for help on this topic and previous attendees speak highly of it. Sadly the June course was cancelled due to lack of participants.  This course needs 6 people in order to go ahead.If you need to learn how to read journal articles and draw conclusions about whether to use the evidence in your practice this course is for you. The course is a mixture of taught and practical sessions including an introduction to statistics.

Inactive things

The Generation Inactive report is an analysis of the UK's childhood inactivity epidemic and tangible solutions to get children moving.
In response to the report, Prof Russell Viner from the RCPCH said
“At a time where children should be at their most active, it’s concerning that half of seven year olds are not doing the recommended one hour of physical activity that’s advised each day – the Generation Inactive report is a welcome reminder that more must be done to improve the health of our nation’s children.   The report can be read here

Things branded as healthy
"Healthy snacks could do more harm than good" say researchers from universities in Munich & Pennsylvania.
This research was a series of randomised controlled trials to investigate the effect of fitness branding on restrained eaters’ food consumption and post-consumption exercise.
The report showed that while some may have restrained from eating, say, 500 calories in the shape of crisps, they could then end up consuming a similar amount in muesli. Read about this on NHS Choices


Protective things for summer
Do you know your UVB from your UVA and what exactly is SPF?A Royal Pharmaceutical Society survey into sunscreen use has revealed a worrying lack of understanding about the degree of sun protection different products provide.
In particular, many are unaware that the SPF rating alone displayed in sunscreen labelling does not guarantee good all round protection from potential sun damage. see here for an explanation

Safe things - our children?
