Things in the library 26 Feb

e-promptThings out and about...
You might see me wandering around the outer reaches of the hospital in the next couple of weeks getting lost!  In order to make sure that the management and administration of the hospital knows about the services the library can offer Sarah and myself are meeting members of the Trust's Executive Group to find out what their information needs are and how we might be able to help. One service we offer for all specialties, including health administration, is our e-prompt current awareness service which will keep you up-to-date with recent publications.

More about leadership...

The King's Fund have just announced the programme for their Sixth annual leadership & management summit on 25th May 2016. This year’s summit will explore the importance of developing and implementing a quality improvement strategy for the NHS. With the NHS in England facing the immense challenge of bringing about improvements in patient care at a time of growing financial and workload pressures, the summit will address how to design and redesign work processes and systems that deliver health care with better outcomes and lower cost.
The conference sessions will examine the importance of involving clinicians in decision-making and leadership in order to bring about long-term, sustainable changes in care and get the best value for every pound spent. Throughout the day, there will be debate on how best to ensure NHS staff are equipped with the skills needed to bring about changes in care, directly and constantly supported by leaders at all levels.

Things in the library 19 Feb

Things still in a mess...
We have remained open - some bits now look lovely although not in their final state. Other bits are still a work in progress..a set back yesterday when due to a lack of communication between 3 companies our new counter wasn't built to the right size. However a rescue plan has been put into operation and all should be well eventually. The bit of counter we have got looks great and our new doors (to give us an office) are looking beautiful.

Things about e-books...
Following a trial last December we have committed some money to provide e-books for the coming year. We won't be able to buy many as they are very expensive but watch out for more details later. They will be available to you via your NHS Open Athens login so if you don't have one yet follow the instructions here

More things about evidence based practice...
The Joseph Rowntree Foundation have recently published a report on 'Building better outcomes for children through evidence based practice. An evaluation of the Evidence2Success project in Perth & Kinross'. This summary outlines learning points for local councils, the NHS and others looking to improve children’s services.Children’s service providers are under increased pressure to provide families with cost-effective support. The international Evidence2Success (E2S) project, piloted by a cross-agency partnership in Perth & Kinross, seeks to improve children’s outcomes by moving resources towards evidence-based services.

"In an oak-panelled room in Oxford, ten young bloods with cut-glass vowels and deep pockets are meeting, intent on restoring their right to rule. Members of an elite student dining society, the boys are bunkering down for a wild night of debauchery, decadence and bloody good wine. But this isn't just a jolly: they’re planning a revolution."      Tickets: Wed £5, Thur-Sat £7 (£6 in Advance) Ticket Phone No: 0114 222 8676

Thing in the library 12 Feb 2016

Starting point
Well thing are all over the place in the library this week...
If you have been following our Facebook posts you will have seen a transformation under way. Last Friday we were covered in blue plastic, had wood and asbestos ripped out over the weekend which revealed some very dirty walls and radiators and have now been painted and re-carpeted. Also our old counter area has been removed and we have a temporary entrance and counter area in the computer room. By the end of next week we hope we will be getting back to normal. Please excuse our dishevelled state in the mean time but we are open.
Our blue phase
Years of grime
Painted and carpeted

Things for finding evidence...

We have mentioned TRIP Database before and recommend it as an additional search tool. We have heard this week that for a pilot period of one year, HEE has negotiated access to the Premium version of the TRIP database. The site is also due to be redesigned in 4-6 weeks but try it out from an NHS computer to get full access. If you then set up a personal TRIP account clinicians should be able to use the premium version elsewhere too.

Things about Child Services
The Nuffield Trust issued a briefing document this week 'The future of
nuffieldtrustchild health services: new models of care'. The briefing is based on a 2015 Nuffield Trust workshop that brought together frontline clinicians, service users, commissioners, representatives from new care models and a range of other stakeholders. The briefing draws on presentations, discussions and
materials submitted by delegates at the workshop, and other published literature.

Things in the Library 5 Feb

Things disrupted...
Counter before
Window area
Work is starting today on a mini-refurbishment of the library so you may experience some disruption if you visit the library in the next 2 or 3 weeks. We are very excited that our bid for funding to HEE (Health Education England) was successful and that we will have a new counter/reception area. We can get rid of our Dickensian glass box and will actually be able to sit facing into the library and at the right height. Some old wooded shelves under the window (and their accompanying asbestos) are being removed this weekend which means will will have room for a few more study spaces. An office will be created behind the counter to give some privacy and stop the librarians being told to "Ssshhh"by their customers (it has happened!). It will also stop our smells (cooking!) drifting out into the library. Many apologies for the inconvenience  - we hope to remain open throughout but please excuse us if we don't look our best. Regular updates will be posted on our Facebook page and if you are planning a special visit please ring first to check we are open.

Little bit more disruption...
Image result for broken communicationOn Tuesday 9 Feb between 07:00 and 10:00 The University of Sheffield will be upgrading the IT network in the Children's Hospital and so the University wired and wireless network will be down during this period. This means that we won't have access to our computers and library management system at this time so please bear with us while we shuffle bits of paper around. If you are accessing our catalogue remotely this will not be a problem.

Things about revalidation for nurses...
Royal College of NursingThe RCN listed 10 top tips to prepare for revalidation this week which can be found here. The process is already open for nurses and midwives with an April 2016 revalidation date

 Things about obesity...
The National Child Measurement Programme shows that a third of 10–11 year olds in England are currently overweight or obese. Obesity increases the risk of poor physical health and mental health in childhood, and children who are obese are more likely to be obese in adulthood. Four tiers of services are recommended in the care pathway: universal prevention services; lifestyle weight management services often run in the community; specialist support from a clinical team; and surgery (in exceptional circumstances to over 12s). This article "Evidence base for the prevention and management of child obesity" has just been published online in Paediatrics and Child Health.

Things about love...
No not Valentine's day...but 'professional love'. Dr Jools Page, from the University of Sheffield’s School of Education, has explored how a rise in media coverage surrounding sex abuse scandals has had an impact on childcare providers by asking early years professionals for their views on ‘professional love’ in an anonymous online survey. "The project findings were used to co-produce a set of professional development materials in the form of an ‘Attachment Toolkit’ which includes case studies, narratives and video, which has been trialled and evaluated by Fennies, our collaborating group of nurseries,” said Dr Page. More about the study here and access to the website and toolkit here

Things about drug approval...
Experts from the School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR) at the University of Sheffield have produced a free, open online course in Health Technology Assessment. "From the lab to the counter: How do new health interventions, such as a new drug, get approved for use?"
The course launches on 15 February and is free for anyone to take, all you need is access to a computer with an internet connection. Sign up here.
Whether you’re in the medical or pharmaceutical profession, studying or thinking of studying a subject such as medicine, nursing, healthcare or health economics, or simply an interested member of the public or a patient yourself, this course will give you the story behind the headlines. And you’ll be able to answer the question: How do healthcare systems make decisions about funding new treatments?

...and then of course Pancake Day starts off the season of Lent on Tuesday. I'm off to buy streaky bacon and maple syrup for my pancakes. Many people with or without faith 'give something up' for Lent like chocolate or drinking - however another approach is to start a 'good' habit ...do it for 40 days and who knows you might be able to keep doing it!
