Things exciting...please come
The library mini-refurbishment is now complete and we would like to invite you to come and
celebrate our "new look". The barriers and the Victorian banking hall have gone and the library is much more open, light and airy. It is also an Aladdin's cave of services relevant and available to all staff. To meet the library staff and discover what we do, find out what our plans are to help provide care and treatment of the highest standard, admire the view from our windows which could be yours when you use our facilities and find out why Journal Club is nicknamed "Muffin Club"... come along to the Library, F Floor, on Grey Lifts, 11.30am to 2.30pm on Tuesday 28 June.
Things published...
The RCN have published a briefing document 'Inequalities experienced by children across the UK : accessing the right care, at the right time, in the right place' .This publication highlights how the health care inequalities experienced by children are influenced by getting the right care at the right time and in the right place. It sets out the current policy context across the UK, spotlights some key areas and concludes with recommendations on the actions needed by all governments across the UK.
More things about e-books...
Last week I told you about the Oxford online books now available via our library catalogue. You may remember before Christmas we did a trial of the Proquest EBook Central library. We have decided to dedicate a small amount of money to buying some extra e-books. There is a vast collection (20,000) available; you can browse an individual books for 5 mins before needing to request a purchase so if you are just wanting to check some information that may be sufficient time. If you see something that you think would be useful for a longer period then you can request that we purchase it and then you will be able to borrow it for a set period of time. We have limited money so will only be buying e-books that will be of greatest use to as many people as possible. We will reply to your request as soon as possible. Books that we purchase will be added to our normal catalogue but to see the whole collection you will need to login in here with your NHS OpenAthens account.
Things about nursing re-validation...
Revalidation: Nursing Demands Evidence Webinar 21st July 2016, 3-4pm. You may like to attend a short webinar, which looks at the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) themes and demonstrates how The Royal Marsden Manual of Clinical Nursing Procedures (9th edition) supports each theme of the code. The webinar covers individual case studies and scenarios supporting each aspect of the code. Presenters include the editors of The Royal Marsden Manual of Clinical Nursing Procedures, sharing their many years of practical experience in nursing, and they are supported by case studies given by librarians working with NHS practitioners. This presentation provides invaluable information and suggestions for all nurses engaged with re-validation.

Something to eat...
Not sure if it will be barbecue weather or not this weekend but this is a slow cooking dish that is fabulous and works for outdoor or indoor eating. We cooked it last weekend and served with cous cous and various salads. Finding unsweetened pomegranate juice rather than the drink was a bit of a challenge (eventually found it in Waitrose) and quite pricey so I used a combination of both which worked well).

NHS confederation have just published "New care models and staff engagement: All aboard" This publication brings together the experiences of four vanguards which are placing staff at the centre of new care models. Things in the library 10 June
Things about mental health...
The Centre for Mental Health has published Missed opportunities: a review of recent evidence into children and young people's mental health. This document seeks to piece together the evidence about children and young people’s mental health and well-being in the UK, based on the most recent high quality research. It breaks down findings into four age groups: pregnancy to age 4; children aged 5-10, 11-15 year olds, and young adults aged 16-25. For all age groups, a dominant issue has been the persistent gap between children’s needs and their access to help and support, especially early on when difficulties with mental health first emerge.
The Children’s Commissioner for England has published a report on access to child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS). Findings include: on average, 28% of children and young people referred to CAMHS in 2015 were not allocated a service; of 3000 children and young people who were referred to CAMHS with a life-threatening condition in 2015, 14% were not allocated any provision and 51% went on a waiting list.
Your views on TRIP...
We often recommend TRIP as a useful tool for finding evidence and other useful resources such as images - particularly as currently NHS users have free access to Pro version via OpenAthens. If you use TRIP then there is the opportunity to influence it's development.
IT’S POLL TIME: We like to reach out to our users to help us better plan Trip’s developments. As such we have developed this very brief poll (three questions only). We really do listen – so now’s your time to help make Trip better for you and other Trip users.
COMMUNITY Q&A: An idea we’re working on and looking for volunteers! Trip answers around 70% of the questions users have, so can we provide a function to help with the other 30%? So, we’re at the very early stages of planning a system to allow users to ask their unanswered question to the wider Trip community. We’re really just needing a little bit of your time to help us understand a few issues relating to creating such a community. So, if you’re interested please contact us via community@tripdatabase.com
YOUTUBE: We have created a great YouTube Channel with a number of great ‘how to use Trip’ guides. Please follow the link and subscribe, we’re really keen to get 100 subscribers as then we’re given more flexibility by YouTube to make the channel even better!
Things about crying...
It can be stressful for parents when their baby cries and this can have a negative impact on their mental health and relationships. Coping with Crying is a short film from NSPCC which is being trialled in various areas. It shows new or expectant parents coping strategies they can use with a crying baby and prepares them for how babies normally behave. It also explains the dangers of roughly handling or shaking a baby. This report provides evidence about what works to help parents cope with a crying infant and reduce non-accidental injury.
Things about nursing associates...
Health Education England (HEE) has published the response to its consultation on the Nursing Associate role. This report outlines HEE’s response to the feedback received on “Building capacity to care and capability to treat - a new team member for health and social care: Consultation” and identifies how HEE will take forward proposals to introduce a new nursing support role in England by Spring 2017 to support the Registered Nurse workforce in providing high quality care across health and social care settings.
Things about Rotherham...
Rotherham has set out its new plans to become a “ child-centred borough”. Key principles include: a focus on the rights and voice of the child, keeping children safe and healthy and taking a community-wide approach, working with and harnessing the resources of existing community groups.
Things about World Meat-Free day...Monday 13th June
The culmination of a global campaign trying to get people around the world to change their diet for just one day. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the benefits of eating less meat and show how going veggie can result in fairer food systems and better results for our planet.
So why not try this recipe as Asparagus is in season at the moment (but don't buy any that has flown across the world!)
