The transfer window is now closed, personnel are settling in and everyone is looking forward to the new season...
not football JOURNAL CLUB!!

Following the positive comments from last season we have a packed programme between now and February. We kick off with an introductory session tomorrow 4th Sept at 17.30 - 18.30 in the Clinical Skills Centre where Sarah Massey and Charlie Elder will introduce what journal club is, how it is structured and what you can gain from it.  There will be home made muffins and drinks available. The first presentation is then on 20th September.

Journal Club Autumn dates..and cakes

Following a successful Spring season of presentations, informal discussion, critical appraisal and muffins the summer break is upon us. 

Thanks to all those who recently gave us useful feedback – in response the Autumn programme will run from Sept 2012 until Jan 2013 on the 4^th Tuesday afternoons and Thursday mornings.

Journal Club is open to all health professionals and is a fun, informal way of learning to criticise papers and gather evidence to change practice, not forgetting partaking of homemade  muffins  whilst you work!

Look out for the posters, flyers and email reminders but here are the dates so you can add them to your calendars/diaries now.

If you are off on your holidays soon and haven’t had chance to stock up on some relaxing fiction don’t forget we have around 50 leisure books available in the library..including science fiction, thrillers, chick lit and biographies.

Journal Club Tuesday 29th May 17.30-18.30pm Stephenson Wing

It is journal club this Tuesday and for your delight and delectation we have a paper presented by Vanessa Algar: 

"Validation of a laboratory risk index score for the identification of severe bacterial infection in children with fever without a source" from ADC 2010 95: (968-973)

REMEMBER

If you do not get a chance to read the paper do not worry just come along.  The discussion that follows the presentation is the opportunity to make a change in practice and challenge current thinking.  The last 4 JC discussions have been illuminating, informative and have led to a recommendation to audit current practice.

The usual firm has been employed for catering and we can look forward to cheese, olive and onion scones and as yet undecided sweet muffins!

Journal Club next meeting

When I said I would do a journal club once a month at 8am I did not realize a month goes past so quick!  

Thursday morning  17^th May will see the 3^rd of our early morning  club presentations and will feature a cohort study entitled “Unexpected collapse in apparently healthy newborns – a prospective study of a missing cohort of neonatal and near-death events.”  It will be presented by Steph Borg who is currently at the Jessops so the topic is one of great relevance to her practice.

Remember if you have not had time to read the paper, it does not matter as Steph’s presentation will give you the information you need to join in the discussion.

So, Join us on F floor of the Stephenson Wing for homemade baking, an early morning cuppa and hopefully a sparkling discussion which will change the world albeit our tiny part of it!

Nice books at last!

When you tell people that you work in the Library at the Children’s Hospital  they often assume it is a patients’  library and say things like  ‘that must be lovely...all  those nice picture books’.  

Well it is lovely working here but most of our books certainly don’t have nice pictures in them!

Recently we have expanded our small (donated) fiction collection to include a wide variety of books including poetry, biography, chick lit, suspense, thriller and classic fiction.

Our new Leisure Reading Collection is available for all SCH staff and registered library users to borrow or read in the library – we also have a selection of very short Quick Reads.

We believe it is important to provide this additional service to staff who may not get the chance to get to a public library or perhaps feel the need to chill out from work with a good book. Many of the titles have been selected from the Reading Agency’s MoodBoosting Books list.

Check out the titles available by coming up to browse the shelves (F Floor Stephenson Wing) or by searching our library catalogue  for the keyword ‘Leisure’.  

Library Survey winner!

In January we sent out a survey to all our users and hospital staff and had a fantastic response of 254 returned surveys. Those who left an email address were entered in a prize draw to receive a £20 book token kindly donated by Blackwells Bookshop. 

The winner was Sarah Bell (University of Sheffield) seen below receiving her prize from Sarah Massey (right) our Knowledge & Library Services Manager.

We are still analysing the results of the survey but we are pleased that people who have used our website  found the information they were looking for 96% of the time.

It’s really useful to have your suggestions for service developments and whilst we can’t promise to provide all of them we will certainly do what we can to make our service match your needs.

PS It is not obligatory to wear stripes to come into the library!
