Things read
Over Christmas I managed to find time to read 'The Help' by Kathryn Stockett published in 2009. Some of you may have seen the film but if you want to read the book we have a copy available for loan in the library.
The book is set in Mississippi in 1962 and is about the lives of the the black maids employed by the white families - trusted to raise the white children yet segregated  in so many ways and not trusted with the family silver. The intertwining of these two worlds: the home lives of the maids and those of the 'ladies who lunch' at a time of political change and racial tension is in turn horrific, hilarious and often moving. A friendship develops between a white college girl trying to find out what happened to the black maid who raised her and two of the maids who trust her and want to tell their stories.
The characters are brilliantly described and there are those on both sides that you feel empathy with and the courage they have to show crossing boundaries is clearly described. The food and weather of the southern states are a running theme throughout the book adding to the atmosphere and drawing you into this world. An extraordinary story which I couldn't put down it had me in turn laughing out loud and despairing of man's (and women's) lack of tolerance and understanding of others.

Things theatrical

Things creative..ish..
I decided to have a go at book folding last week - here is my first attempt - it may have a future life as next year's Christmas decorations! Please don't do this to your library books.
I used an old copy of the BNF which has to be discarded when the new one arrives. If you always want to be sure of accessing the BNF or BNF for Children then you can download an app for your phone/tablet - you need to have a current NHS Open Athens account to access the information. If you don't yet have an Athens accout which also gives you access to a variety of electronic resources then find out more and apply here.

Things (people) in the library
Chocolate and pumpkin seed biscuits. On a Tuesday or Thursday morning you may find someone sat at Sarah's desk who isn't Sarah...Jac works here a few hours each work processing Open Athens applications but at other times you will find her in Audiology. She has suggested this week's recipe Chocolate and pumpkin seed biscuits and tells us the Audiology team like her biscuits..we have noted the fact that she hasn't made biscuits for us ....but are trying not to feel hurt!

Things published
NICE has published an evidence update "Spasticity in children and young people with non-progressive brain disorders" find the full text here. This is a summary of selected new evidence relevant to NICE clinical guideline ’Spasticity in children and young people with non-progressive brain disorders: management of spasticity and co-existing motor disorders and their early musculoskeletal complications’ (2012)
Public Health England has published a support pack for A & E departments 'Young people's hospital alcohol pathway' read it here
It is aimed at A&E clinicians, hospital managers, substance misuse and young people’s commissioners and includes a set of key questions or prompts for professionals to help them develop care pathways within A&E and into other services for young people.

Things about CAMHS
The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust (The Tavistock) and the Anna Freud Centre (AFC) formed a consortium to further develop and refine a new model for CAMHS based on their shared thinking in this area: this is now known as the THRIVE model.
They say:
"We are sharing our thinking as it develops to help inform the current national debate on the future of CAMHS and as a basis for future provision. We are not presenting THRIVE as a tried and tested one-size-fits-all implementation model, nor is the language and terminology for different groups fixed at this point. Whilst AFC and Tavistock do have thoughts on implementation in particular contexts, this paper does not purport to be a how-to guide.
We feel that the THRIVE model offers a radical shift in the way that services are conceptualised and potentially delivered, along with suggestions for how they might be reviewed and improved. Through wider discussion, planning and, in time, the commissioning processes, the model will appropriately undergo refinements anddevelopments as to how it can be applied to local contexts. "

A search for CAMHS on our library catalogue will give you a link to this resource.

Things going live
Link to homepageA new system to help doctors and nurses spot children suffering from abuse and neglect has successfully gone live. Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Trust are the first hospitals in the country to use the new Child Protection - Information Sharing (CP-IS) system which is designed to help avoid tragic cases such as Baby P being repeated. Read about it here
The system will now be rolled out across the country, connecting emergency departments, out of hours GPs, walk in centres and local authorities through a national system that will alert clinical staff to those at risk of abuse or neglect.

Things pledged
girl on weighing scalesDeputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has set to pledge an extra £150m of funding to help children with eating disorders. The aim is to invest in preventative therapy to cut the need for hospital treatment. The money, earmarked in this year's Autumn Statement, comes after figures show that admissions for eating disorders among young people have been rising in England.

Things in the press...be careful
Repeated binge drinking leads to the death of brain cellsA pill to cure binge drinking and dementia according to Daily Mail The science was covered by the Mail Online, which exaggerated the findings in this open-access article by implying the rat results also applied to humans and binge drinking, as well as Alzheimer's and other "brain diseases". This may be the case, but it is too early to say with any confidence or assurance. The study did not test the effects of the drug, even in animal models of Alzheimer's or non-alcohol-related brain diseases. Read the true story here.

Using evidence as a basis for best practice is what we are about in the library. Don't forget we can do literature searches for you or with you and you can also attend our journal club. For other sources of evidence check out our webpage here

Things to huddle over
It's good to talk, we're always told. And now child health expert Dr Peter Lachman says "huddles" - informal meetings of hospital staff - are a simple way of improving children's hospital care. Based on a model pioneered in Cincinnati Children's Hospital, the RCPCH have conducted trials of quality improving techniques including the huddle. Read about it here

Things that went ..SNAP!
Goat's cheese & thyme stuffed chickenNo not the knicker elastic..anyone else old enough to actually remember knicker elastic???...anyway I digress... last weekend completely coincidentally Gill & Sarah made the same dish at home and pronounced it excellent so we thought that should be this weeks recipe. Goat's cheese & thyme stuffed chicken - fresh thyme preferable to dried and I used pancetta slices instead of streaky bacon..both worked well.

Things to listen to
I have been listening to the first of the Reith lectures on BBCRadio 4 this week and can thoroughly recommend it as a thought provoking and stimulating listen for anyone working in healthcare. The series is entitled 'The Future in Medicine' and the lecturer is Atul Gawande who is a practising surgeon at Brigham & Women's Hospital and Professor at both the Harvard School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School. He’s well known for his writing on medicine, and his research on medical error and performance. In the first lecture of four, 'Why do Doctors Fail?' he explores the nature of imperfection in medicine. In particular, Gawande will examine how much of failure in medicine remains due to ignorance, and how much is due to ineptitude - and what that means for where medical progress will come from in the future. It's available on iplayer here and there is also a transcript but he is a moving speaker so do listen.

Things published

Things about Mental health
Teenage anxiety has been in the news this week
Epic friends is a website for young people helping friends who are struggling.
Health Committee - Third Report on Children's and adolescents' mental health and CAMHS has been published the report concludes that there are serious and deeply ingrained problems with the commissioning and provision of children's and adolescents' mental health services. These problems run through the whole system from prevention and early intervention through to inpatient services for the most vulnerable young people. The committee recommends the development, implementation and monitoring of national minimum service specifications, together with an audit of spending on CAMHS. It further recommends that the Department of Health/NHS England taskforce look to remove the perverse incentives that act as a barrier to Tier 3.5 service development and ensure investment in early intervention services. It also recommends a clear national policy directive for CAMHS, underpinned by adequate funding.
