Things in 3D
You will no doubt have seen the imaginative uses being made of 3D printers in various branches of medicine. There is some interesting research just published by scientists at University of Sheffield using a 3D printed guide to help nerves damaged in traumatic incidents repair themselves. Read here

Fab things
Check out the new Academy of Fabulous NHS Stuff website created by Roy Lilley which aims to share all the fabulous things about the NHS. A collaboration to ensure best practice examples, great ideas and service solutions are available to all.


Things exciting
We were thrilled to be nominated this year for a Star award for "Outstanding contribution by a non-clinical department". The library supports Evidence Based Medicine, Clinical Governance, Clinical Effectiveness and Patient Safety by undertaking literature searches and supplying articles which can be used to guide the treatment patients of the trust. In addition, utilizing the information skills of the library staff saves clinicians an enormous amount of time. If you wish to find out more about this service please contact us. Sadly we didn't win...this year!

Event things in elsewhere in Sheffield
Sheffield Festival of Science & Engineering events are taking place at the moment and continuing up to Thurs 26 March. This provides a wonderful opportunity for schools and colleges, families and individuals to engage with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at all levels. Whether hearing from experts about the latest advances in research or simply discovering that science and technology can be fun everything from micromachines that can swim around inside the body, talks on friction, colour, spirals and science around the home. If you remember Sheffield's own Howard Middleton from 'Great British Bake Off' then you might like to try these recent recipes he put on his blog. They have a flowery theme which seems appropriate now we are official into Spring Marigold Melts and Rose-scented raspberry biscuits

Things about mental health 
Published recently a report by Centre for Mental Health which concludes that investing in children's mental health services is excellent value for money and will bring a lifetime of benefits to young people, their families, communities and the economy as a whole. Read it here


Thing to attend
The Academic Paediatric Association conference is being held in Leeds on March 26th & 27th 2015. This is the preeminent conference for all trainees and consultants with an interest in academic paediatrics. There are a variety of keynote speakers, talks from trainees, workshops, poster presentations and ample networking opportunities including a gala meal.Booking details here

Do OD: Putting Theory into Practice NHS Employers event 10 March Bristol 
The purpose of the event is to give NHS Organisational Development Practitioners access to stimulating academic thinking, discussion and debate. There is a wealth of research and evidence that supports the practice of OD but there isn't always  the time to engage with it in meaningful ways. The event will help recognise the range of academic thinking available  and give opportunities to discuss how they can better embed evidence and theory into their work. This will be an energetic day which aims to stretch our brains, create space for conversation and challenge our thinking through provocative debate. More information here


Webinair thing
Join Sean Fox, MD, Associate Editor-in-Chief of PEMSoft for a short lecture on bronchiolitis and respiratory distress in children. Dr. Fox is the 2014 recipient of the ACEP National Emergency Medicine Faculty Teaching Award, the chair for the ACEP Pediatric Emergency Medicine Section and the director of the Emergency Medicine residency didactic curriculum. He also manages several educational websites geared toward the practice of emergency medicine. Info here but check the timezone information

Lovely video from the last tram route through Sheffield in 1960 - Millhouses to the depot..I did ride on the last tram myself (although I was only 4) but lots of places and views I remember. See if you can spot places you recognise!

Things read 
Over Christmas I managed to find time to read 'The Help' by Kathryn Stockett published in 2009. Some of you may have seen the film but if you want to read the book we have a copy available for loan in the library.
The book is set in Mississippi in 1962 and is about the lives of the the black maids employed by the white families - trusted to raise the white children yet segregated  in so many ways and not trusted with the family silver. The intertwining of these two worlds: the home lives of the maids and those of the 'ladies who lunch' at a time of political change and racial tension is in turn horrific, hilarious and often moving. A friendship develops between a white college girl trying to find out what happened to the black maid who raised her and two of the maids who trust her and want to tell their stories.
The characters are brilliantly described and there are those on both sides that you feel empathy with and the courage they have to show crossing boundaries is clearly described. The food and weather of the southern states are a running theme throughout the book adding to the atmosphere and drawing you into this world. An extraordinary story which I couldn't put down it had me in turn laughing out loud and despairing of man's (and women's) lack of tolerance and understanding of others.

Do you know about the library theatre...no not us..the Central Sheffield Library. Hidden away on Tudor Square next to the Lyceum. They have just released the next season's programme




Things about medical education

The GMC are consulting about standards for medical education and training and would like to hear your views on their draft proposals. They are asking medical students, doctors in training, trainers, teachers, as well as the organisations that educate and train medical students and doctors, for their views on the proposed standards. Anyone who is interested in medical education and training can respond to the consultation. Take part here
