Things in the library 31 Jan

Things in the news
You will have heard about the peanut allergy 'cure' in the news this week, read the full text of the article in the Lancet here

Things new
We now have a colour printer/photocopier available in the library - self-service - no change to cost  5p a
side for black & white or 35p a side for colour. If your department has an account with us, and you have permission to charge to it, then we can add the cost to that. Remember you can scan and send a document as a pdf to your SCH email address from here without charge.

Things for finding evidence
http://blogs.umass.edu/gsgs/files/2014/01/magnifying-glass.jpg
We are great fans of Google up here in the library and one of our recent InfoBites session was on tips & tricks in searching better with Google BUT we never recommend it for looking for clinical queries. This 2010 article "Googling children's health: reliability of medical advice on the internet" found that the advice on 11% of sites was incorrect. If you don't have time to do a search yourself don't forget we have a Clinical Q & A service where we can search for you. More details about searching for evidence, good sites to use and a form to request a search here

Things to celebrate
Happy Chinese New Year to those celebrating today - the year of the wooden horse

Things to eat
So as a good excuse (if one was needed) to eat Chinese and you want to make your own there are a selection of recipes here  I rather fancy the pork potsticker dumplings

Things to watch
Children's Emergency Rescue starts a run of 3 episodes next week on Tuesday 28th Jan at 20:00 on BBC2. Featuring of course our very own Embrace team....all looking like super heroes on this picture (without capes and external underwear though!). I shall be watching with interest as we often supply articles and do literature searches for the team so it will be nice to put faces to names.
Don't forget if you work for Sheffield Children's Hospital ....we are your librarians...you don't have to be based at the Western Bank site to use our services. More info here

Things hurting?
If you have taken up exercise as part of a New Year resolution or to to shift the bulge caused by eating too many muffins at our Journal Club this NHS Choices article explains why you might be hurting.

Things to learn from
Talking of Journal Club those of you who didn't attend this week missed a great learning opportunity...come on junior doctors save the consultants from eating too many muffins! Check out the programme and past presentations here

Things said about libraries
Apparently Albert Einstein said "The only thing that you absolutely have to know, is the location of the library". These days you don't have to come to us ...although we are very happy to see you...but if you don't know how to find us we are next to Clinical Skills on F Floor of Stephenson Wing via the link corridor on C Floor from the main hospital or via the outside entrance opposite Starbucks. Sadly we don't look like the libraries featured here but having looked at all these images we are planning hard for redevelopment..which is your favourite..mine is the one in Norway I think.

Things to eat
A personal favourite is this fish dish Spanish inspired hake with stewed peppers. Good flavours and colourful too. Recipe here

Things in the library 17 Jan

Things to read
If you watched Panorama last Monday 'I want my baby back', which investigated the family courts system, you will have seen that our very own Prof Nick Bishop was one of the interviewees talking about his work on Vitamin D and rickets. This week he and Dr Charlie Elder have an article published in the Lancet  on rickets - the link to the pdf is here and you will be able to access the full text with your OpenAthens login. The library has supported their work by searching the literature and sourcing articles so please make use of these services if you need such support.
Prof Bishop's interview also took place in the library and for any of you whose mind was wandering (surely not!) you may have wondered why a nice run of bound journals was interspersed with a couple of different coloured volumes...the cameraman thought it looked prettier...sigh...

Things about Librarians
Librarian from Disney's 'Monsters University'©
As a profession we work in a myriad different companies and organisations so we go by all sorts of weird and wonderful job titles. We thought this fun Librarian Title Generator was a good way to give you an idea of what can be encompassed by our job. The complexity and scope of the profession is often not realised in the wider world (and certainly not in the world of films where glasses, hair in a bun and a 'sshhh' is the usual stereotype.)

Things to follow
We have a Twitter account so you can follow us here - we tend to mostly retweet items we think may be of interest to staff working in paediatrics. We also automatically post these on Facebook and our library catalogue page. So if you don't Tweet but you do use Facebook then please 'Like' our page here.

Things that are new

Many will have come across TripDatabase (not the one for booking holidays) which is an excellent free resource for finding quality evidence. This week they have launched a new Twitter feed @TripChildHealth - this will post all the latest evidence, added to the Trip Database, focused on child health. We will be monitoring it but if you use Twitter you might want to follow it directly.

Things you may want to attend
Introduction to Quality Improvement and Patient Safety 14 February 2014 . For those working in child health who are motivated to improve the quality of healthcare of children and young people. The RCPCH has launched an important new series of education courses on Quality Improvement and Patient Safety. The series offers a range of training for all child health practitioners interested in encouraging quality improvement. As a trainee, consultant, nurse, manager or administrator, you are in an ideal position to see areas that need improvement, whether it is about access to resources, more support, poorly functioning systems, wasting of resources by unnecessary duplication or poor communication then this is where you can bring these to the attention of your department and work together to make the patient journey safer and more efficient.

Things to make - a new skill?

If you have never tackled making flaky pastry then Delia has a very easy foolproof method which you can use for making her sausage rolls (meat and vegetarian)

As for me I'm off to have a second family Christmas this weekend...although we are having a Summer Pudding not a Christmas one..a little early but made with frozen berry packs works really well. This recipe looks similar to the one my husband makes - although adding a couple of tablespoons of cassis or blackcurrant cordial is good too.
