Things in the library 2 Oct 2015

Cells seen under a microscopeThings to sign up for
If you have never taken part in a MOOC (massive open online course) you might want to try this one which has been recommended to us by a SCH consultant. The course is called 'Antimicrobial stewardship: Managing Antibiotic Resistance', and is run in association with the University of Dundee and the British Society of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy. The people involved are the leaders in the field nationally and does seem to be really very good. The course runs for 6 weeks and although it started on 28th September it's possible to join at any point during the 6 week period. It isn't aimed specifically at infection specialists and may be of interest to others at SCH. Its is free to join here

Things about e-books
Cover image: E-book imageNot your bedtime reading on a Kindle (although you could do that) but reading of e-books for study, to improving clinical practice, professional development etc. We have been looking into the possibility of buying some e-books for SCH staff and would love to hear your views on what you would like us to buy (if we find some money), any experiences you have had using e-books - both positive and negative. Please drop us an email or come in to chat to us - we need to have your input to inform our decision.

HomeThings about Inflammatory Bowel Disease
The Royal College of Physicians has published the fourth inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) clinical audit report. The report reveals that the majority of patients (80% adult and 77% paediatric) with Crohn’s disease saw an improvement following biological therapies. The purpose of this audit is to measure the efficacy, safety and appropriate use of the biological therapies infliximab and adalimumab, in patients with IBD in the UK. The audit also aims to capture patients’ views on their quality of life at intervals during their treatment. This is the link to the paediatric report

More details here

or perhaps things cosy
Or now the nights are drawing in perhaps you need a little bit of Danish Hygge in which case these Grated Apple and Cinnamon rolls  from a food blogger in Leeds might be just the thing!

Things sad and good

It's always sad to say goodbye to staff when they move on ..and great when they come back again. Lovely to be appreciated though and we were touched to receive this card from a surgeon moving on today. Good luck Caroline!
