Things in the library 31 Jan

Things in the news
You will have heard about the peanut allergy 'cure' in the news this week, read the full text of the article in the Lancet here

Things new
We now have a colour printer/photocopier available in the library - self-service - no change to cost  5p a
side for black & white or 35p a side for colour. If your department has an account with us, and you have permission to charge to it, then we can add the cost to that. Remember you can scan and send a document as a pdf to your SCH email address from here without charge.

Things for finding evidence
http://blogs.umass.edu/gsgs/files/2014/01/magnifying-glass.jpg
We are great fans of Google up here in the library and one of our recent InfoBites session was on tips & tricks in searching better with Google BUT we never recommend it for looking for clinical queries. This 2010 article "Googling children's health: reliability of medical advice on the internet" found that the advice on 11% of sites was incorrect. If you don't have time to do a search yourself don't forget we have a Clinical Q & A service where we can search for you. More details about searching for evidence, good sites to use and a form to request a search here

Things to celebrate
Happy Chinese New Year to those celebrating today - the year of the wooden horse

Things to eat

Things to watch
Children's Emergency Rescue starts a run of 3 episodes next week on Tuesday 28th Jan at 20:00 on BBC2. Featuring of course our very own Embrace team....all looking like super heroes on this picture (without capes and external underwear though!). I shall be watching with interest as we often supply articles and do literature searches for the team so it will be nice to put faces to names.
Don't forget if you work for Sheffield Children's Hospital ....we are your librarians...you don't have to be based at the Western Bank site to use our services. More info here

Things hurting?
If you have taken up exercise as part of a New Year resolution or to to shift the bulge caused by eating too many muffins at our Journal Club this NHS Choices article explains why you might be hurting.

Things to learn from
Talking of Journal Club those of you who didn't attend this week missed a great learning opportunity...come on junior doctors save the consultants from eating too many muffins! Check out the programme and past presentations here

Things said about libraries
Apparently Albert Einstein said "The only thing that you absolutely have to know, is the location of the library". These days you don't have to come to us ...although we are very happy to see you...but if you don't know how to find us we are next to Clinical Skills on F Floor of Stephenson Wing via the link corridor on C Floor from the main hospital or via the outside entrance opposite Starbucks. Sadly we don't look like the libraries featured here but having looked at all these images we are planning hard for redevelopment..which is your favourite..mine is the one in Norway I think.

Things to eat
A personal favourite is this fish dish Spanish inspired hake with stewed peppers. Good flavours and colourful too. Recipe here

Things in the library 17 Jan

Things to read
If you watched Panorama last Monday 'I want my baby back', which investigated the family courts system, you will have seen that our very own Prof Nick Bishop was one of the interviewees talking about his work on Vitamin D and rickets. This week he and Dr Charlie Elder have an article published in the Lancet  on rickets - the link to the pdf is here and you will be able to access the full text with your OpenAthens login. The library has supported their work by searching the literature and sourcing articles so please make use of these services if you need such support.
Prof Bishop's interview also took place in the library and for any of you whose mind was wandering (surely not!) you may have wondered why a nice run of bound journals was interspersed with a couple of different coloured volumes...the cameraman thought it looked prettier...sigh...

Things about Librarians
Librarian from Disney's 'Monsters University'©
As a profession we work in a myriad different companies and organisations so we go by all sorts of weird and wonderful job titles. We thought this fun Librarian Title Generator was a good way to give you an idea of what can be encompassed by our job. The complexity and scope of the profession is often not realised in the wider world (and certainly not in the world of films where glasses, hair in a bun and a 'sshhh' is the usual stereotype.)

Things to follow
We have a Twitter account so you can follow us here - we tend to mostly retweet items we think may be of interest to staff working in paediatrics. We also automatically post these on Facebook and our library catalogue page. So if you don't Tweet but you do use Facebook then please 'Like' our page here.

Things that are new

Many will have come across TripDatabase (not the one for booking holidays) which is an excellent free resource for finding quality evidence. This week they have launched a new Twitter feed @TripChildHealth - this will post all the latest evidence, added to the Trip Database, focused on child health. We will be monitoring it but if you use Twitter you might want to follow it directly.

Things you may want to attend
Introduction to Quality Improvement and Patient Safety 14 February 2014 . For those working in child health who are motivated to improve the quality of healthcare of children and young people. The RCPCH has launched an important new series of education courses on Quality Improvement and Patient Safety. The series offers a range of training for all child health practitioners interested in encouraging quality improvement. As a trainee, consultant, nurse, manager or administrator, you are in an ideal position to see areas that need improvement, whether it is about access to resources, more support, poorly functioning systems, wasting of resources by unnecessary duplication or poor communication then this is where you can bring these to the attention of your department and work together to make the patient journey safer and more efficient.

Things to make - a new skill?

If you have never tackled making flaky pastry then Delia has a very easy foolproof method which you can use for making her sausage rolls (meat and vegetarian)

As for me I'm off to have a second family Christmas this weekend...although we are having a Summer Pudding not a Christmas one..a little early but made with frozen berry packs works really well. This recipe looks similar to the one my husband makes - although adding a couple of tablespoons of cassis or blackcurrant cordial is good too.

The Child and Maternal (ChiMat) Health Intelligence Network has published a first version of the Children and Young People’s Health Outcomes Framework .This new resource brings together and builds on health outcomes data from the Public Health Outcomes Framework and the NHS Outcomes Framework. It responds to the Children and Young People’s Health Outcomes Forum’s recommendation that a version of these frameworks be created which highlights areas of particular relevance to improving the health outcomes of children and young people. Things in the library 20th December

Sarah, Gill & Kate would like to  wish everyone a                  Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Things beautiful and tasty
When I contacted the photographer Caroline Trotter to ask for permission to use the above image in our blog (something you should always do unless you know it can be freely used under a Creative Commons licence) she also supplied a lovely recipe for mincemeat - so here it is

Mincemeat
This is a colourful mixture with larger chunks than most mincemeats, just to show its home made!
450g apples peeled cored and roughly chopped
180g shredded suet
200g soft brown sugar
225g raisins
225g sultanas
225g currants
115g dried cranberries
225g glace cherries roughly chopped
grated rind and juice of three lemons
4 tsp mixed spice
½ tps cinnamon
tsp grated nutmeg
6 tblsp whisky

Mix all the ingredients except the whisky, place in a bowl, leave overnight covered. Then place in a oven 120C, gas ¼ for a couple of hours and mix through.
When cold stir in the whisky and store. Make mince pies!

Things inspirational
As Paediatric Surgery is one of the departments we specifically support  with clinical library services I am always interested in seeing what they get up to when away from SCH. Here is Ross Fisher giving a talk at TEDx in Stuttgart - worth watching - none of the children referred to are SCH patients.

Things Sheffield is doing well
Health leaders in the city have welcomed results today which show Sheffield is still leading the way in cutting children’s obesity rates.National figures released today show Sheffield still has one of the lowest rates of childhood obesity nationally with nearly 80 per cent of children aged four to five are of a healthy weight, which is higher than the national average figures of just under 77 per cent. Nearly 65 per cent of children aged 10-11 are of a healthy weight, only slightly lower than the national average of just over 65  per cent.Of the core cities, Sheffield is ranked highest for prevalence of healthy weight in the Yorkshire region and second highest behind Bristol for year 6 children. Things in the library 13 December

Things that are twinkly

We have put up our Christmas decorations and around the tree a selection of our leisure reading books. If you plan to curl up with a good book over Christmas come up to the library to borrow one or browse our selection online here search for 'leisure'.

Things to do with Christmas
On 23rd and 24th December the library staff will be conducting their annual keep fit (and get dusty) routine. We will be stocktaking ...which means we take every item off the shelves, clean them, scan them and put them back again. As this is not a spectator sport the library will be closed those two days and then remain closed until re-opening on Thursday 2nd January.

Things you can help us with
Prior to the stocktake we are looking at various areas in the library to see if the book coverage is as you would like it to be. If you would like to help us by coming and looking at 'your' specialist area and making suggestions please get in touch.

Things to look at  and perhaps use

The British library has just added over a million images to Flickr Commons for anyone to use, remix and repurpose. These images were taken from the pages of 17th, 18th and 19th century books and concern a startling mix of subjects - which can be viewed here I found this image  from 1879 Taylor's "The Illustrated Guide to Sheffield and the surrounding district" of the gates to Weston Park.

Things to ponder on and discuss
There has been considerable discussion lately about scientific publishing - and from our experience we know many journal subscriptions are rocketing in price. This week Andy Schekman, a US biologist who won the Nobel prize in physiology or medicine this year and receives his prize in Stockholm on Tuesday, said his lab would no longer send research papers to the top-tier journals, Nature, Cell and Science. Read the article he wrote in the Guardian here

Things we did
Journal Club this week involved an interesting mix of consultants (Gastroenterology, Surgery and General Paediatrics) along with a clinical nurse specialist and junior doctors discussing a paper on predictive marker tests for children with constipation. Next journal club 9th Jan 8.00 to 9:00 am.

Thing to read
NICE issued new update to guidance on treating urinary tract infection in children download full text here

Things to do with cycles
There has been a lot in the press recently about the safety of cyclists on the roads so I was interested to spot this item. The Canadian Paediatric Society recently published a position statement on 'Bicycle helmet use in Canada: The need for legislation to reduce the risk of head injury'. They state that "research evidence to date and recognition of the substantial impact of traumatic brain injuries support the recommendation for all-ages bicycle helmet legislation" you can read the full text here .Watch out for wobbly young bike riders on Boxing day but I think this chap from 1880 may have had a little too much brandy butter in his mince pies!

Things to eat
A recipe recommended by one of Sarah's daughters who has made it for Christmas gifts - white chocolate mallow fudge - recipe here. Don't eat too much though or you may have to join us in our Stocktaking Exercise.

Things to like
Don't forget we have a Facebook page 'Like' us to keep up with things we find interesting

Things about referencing
Ever wondered how to reference a Tweet or a Facebook page? Bournmouth University have some useful guidelines here, though you should always check with the publication/organisation for which you are writing in case they have specific preferences

Things that won't be working (only on Saturday 7th December)
The suppliers of the Cochrane Library will be conducting maintenance on their platform from 10am UK time on Saturday the 7th December 2013 for approximately 5 hours. We have been informed that reviews and search functionality will not be available during this period.

Things that will be normally be working
The rest of the time the Cochrane resources are all available to you in full text here. They have a variety of online training resources here to help you.

Things to read
We spotted this article published this week 'Bronchiolitis Management Before and After the AAP Guidelines' in Pediatrics. You can access the full text with your NHS Open Athens account.

You may have heard of the report published in November  'How to ensure the right people, with the right skills, are in the right place at the right time: A guide to nursing, midwifery and care staffing capacity and capability' published recently read the full text here

Things to give you a flavour of what we do

A medical publisher recently organized an award scheme to recognise the value medical librarians bring in complex healthcare environments such as medical schools, hospitals and other healthcare institutions globally the winning video can be seen here on YouTube. These are exactly the sort of services we can provide so please ask for more information about how we can support you and your department.
