Things in the library 21 Nov 2015

Things excitingly electronic...
Image result for eblWe are pleased to say that we have a trial of e-books now available to SCH users via your NHS Open Athens login. These will be available until the end of December from this link. You have access to over 44,000 books mostly on Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Psychology and Anatomy & Physiology.
Please try them out, tell us what you think...if nobody uses them or gives us any feedback then we will assume no-one is interested in us buying them. Please remember that this is a trial so the book selection and the length of time you can view the books are not as they would be if we were setting this up permanently. If you have any comments good or bad please let us know. If you want to access these and don't have an NHS Open Athens account then see the information here.

Journal club is an enjoyable event to come along to in the Clinical Skills area of F Floor, eat muffins and discuss a paper. The next meeting is Thursday 26 November 8.00 - 9.00 am where the paper being discussed is 'Oxygen saturation targets in infants with bronchiolitis
(BIDS): a double-blind, randomised, equivalence trial'. Lancet 2015; 386: 1041–48

Things to colour...
Image result for pencil crayonsYou may well have seen a large number of colouring in books for adults in the shops which are being promoted as an aid to mindfulness, stress relieving and creative thinking. Whilst bearing in mind that many of the claims come from the publishers of the books (!) there are certainly many people who find colouring relaxing and a good opportunity to let the mind 'switch off'. As a support to workplace well-being, from Monday, we will have colouring sheets and crayons available free to use in the library...and if your creation is half-finished we will keep it for you until next-time. Come and try it out.

Things about the Millenium Cohort...
"Children of the New Century: Mental health findings from the Millennium Cohort Study" looks at the mental health of 11-year-old children living in the UK. The report finds that about one in ten (10.3 per cent) 11-year-olds in the UK has a mental health problem according to parents - or eight percent as reported by teachers, with symptoms including hyperactivity, conduct problems and peer problems as well as emotional problems. The MCS is a longitudinal study following a large sample of children born in the UK at the start of the 21st century

Turkish one-pan eggs & peppers (Menemen)

Things fading away...
In order to support a friend who is trying to lose weight I am accompanying her on the 5:2 diet (the Fast diet) for a few weeks. Whether or not you are dieting this is a tasty low calorie recipe that we tried out a couple of weeks ago - Turkish one-pan eggs & peppers.

...and for the non-fasting days
I'm looking forward to trying this 'Pork curry with green chillies and tamarind' at the weekend...particularly as it will be cooked by someone else! Not using quite so many chillies though...

Things in the library 13th Nov

Image result for bnf for childrenThings about BNF for children
Concerns have been raised as it has come to light that there are a significant number of errors contained in the recently issued BNF-c 2015/16 books. Sheffield Children's hospital is part of a nationally co-ordinated response to the editors regarding these issues. Whilst awaiting national guidance SCH staff are directed to use the more regularly updated electronic version in preference. It is available on SCH intranet and internet however to access via the mobile app you need to use your NHS Open Athens login. Please ask the library if you need help with this.

Things about mental health outcomes for children

You can now see on-line the speeches and breakout sessions: Pathways Project - delivering interventions to young adults involved with the criminal justice system; Exploring some of the opportunities and challenges within transformation planning and implementation; Update on Tier 4; Implementing a liaison model; Case study- implementing the recommendations of the Tier 4 review; Reducing waiting times.

Things about signs
As part of a hospital project to improve signage we now have a much clearer and obvious entrance - so when you come out of the lifts of F Floor in Stephenson Wing and turn left this is what you will see. We are also revamping our library logo and leaflets - our new logo is already starting to appear. More about this in a future blog.
Things closed ....US
Tuesday 17th November the library will be closed all day. The whole team will be attending a Yorkshire & Humberside Library & Knowledge Services networking event in Leeds. Sorry we won't be around but if you need to return books they can be left in the book drop box outside the library. Any email/messages we will deal with on Wednesday.

Things purple
Image result for World Prematurity Day sheffieldSheffield will go purple once again this year to show its support for World Prematurity Day on November 17. Barkers Pool, along with the lights and fountains of the Peace Garden, will join other monuments around the world - including the Eiffel Tower and Niagara Falls - as they light up purple next Tuesday, to raise awareness of preterm birth. At the Peace Gardens between 16:00 and 18:00 the lights will be turned to purple. The celebrations are going to be attended by the Frozen Princesses and there will be performances from Voices of Jessop Wing. National Grid have also got involved this year and will be lighting up their Sheffield office buildings purple on the day.

Things about a phantom noise in Stephenson wing
Image result for washing lineAll this week the library staff have been hearing a noise which sounds like a washing machine starting its spin cycle...regularly...every few minutes...do let us know if you know what it is. If anyone has started taking in laundry and is also offering an ironing service we would love to know!

Things to relish
hendersonsHenderson's Relish, known locally as Hendo's, is the essence of Sheffield. Join Sheffield University Management School to hear all about the fascinating journey of this iconic Sheffield brand from 1882 to present day. The talk will be followed by a Q&A session. Henry Henderson first began manufacturing his own special type of sauce back in the latter part of the 19th century. Originally manufactured at Broad Lane in Sheffield, Henderson's Relish is still being made and was in uninterrupted production within half a mile of the site from which the first bottle was filled, until the move to a new food production factory in 2013.

Things to make
Veggie spiral pie with spiced tomato sauce & chopped saladSarah can recommend this vegetarian recipe that she will be making again this weekend. Veggie spiral pie with spiced tomato sauce & chopped salad.  Anything containing spinach and feta cheese sounds good to me! Wonder if Henderson's Relish goes with that?!!

Neurotribes: The Legacy of Autism and How to Think Smarter About People Who Think Differently. This book won the Samuel Johnson Prize for non-fiction this year - described as "a ground-breaking book that upends conventional thinking about autism and suggests a broader model for acceptance, understanding, and full participation in society for people who think differently."  Have you read it..should we buy it for the library..what do you think? Let us know your views by email, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, GooglePlus, a comment on this blog, phone or you can even come in and talk to us!

Things coming up soon
We are hoping to trial access to  e-books shortly before we decide whether or not to buy a selection for SCH staff. To access the trial you will need to work for SCH and have a current NHS Open Athens account. If you have any suggestions of which books or type of books you would like to have access to electronically then now is the time to contact us and let us know.

Things about a famous Sheffield scientist
krebsMany of you will have come across the 'Krebs cycle' either in your own studies or perhaps as a distant memory from school, perhaps one that you have had to dredge up from a dusty filing cabinet in your brain when helping your children with their revision! The cycle explains one of the most fundamental processes of life: the conversion of food into energy within a cell.  Sir Hans Kreb (a German Jew who lost his post when Hitler came to power) was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1953 for this work which was done whilst he was working at the University of Sheffield. To mark this the University have put together a series of public events and exhibitions including talks from Nobel Prize winners - Krebfest - KrebsFest is open to everyone and it’s free. All venues are fully accessible. See the full details here

Things to warm you up
Beef goulash soup (Gulyas leves)As the weather settles into typical November after a glorious October here is a beef goulash soup I made last weekend, for a large family party (age range 5 - 85), which fits the bill to warm you up, Cross between a soup and and a stew but my advice is to cut everything up in small pieces to make it more soupy. A caraway seed bread from Forge Bakehouse went with it very well

Things 30 October 2015

Things about antibiotics
The review the Prime Minister commissioned on antimicrobial resistance was published this week. "Rapid Diagnostics:stopping unnecessary use of antibiotics" to address the growing global problem of drug-resistant infections. It was chaired by Jim O’Neill and supported by the Wellcome Trust and UK Government, but with full independence from both.

Things about child abuse and neglect
An article was published this recently in JAMA Psychiatry "Assessment of the Harmful Psychiatric and Behavioral Effects of Different Forms of Child Maltreatment". In conclusion the authors say
"Our findings challenge widely held beliefs about how child abuse should be recognized and treated—a responsibility that often lies with the physician. Because different types of child abuse have equivalent, broad, and universal effects, effective treatments for maltreatment of any sort are likely to have comprehensive psychological benefits. Population-level prevention and intervention strategies should emphasize emotional abuse, which occurs with high frequency but is less punishable than other types of child maltreatment."

Things about children's mental health and well-being
The Office of National Statistics published this week an article Insights into children's mental health and well-being which provides an in depth look at why mental health is an important aspect of children’s well-being, outlines the reasons why the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ)  was chosen and looks at what the data tells us about the prevalence of mental ill health and how it relates to other factors, such as bullying and family relationship.
