Inactive things

The Generation Inactive report is an analysis of the UK's childhood inactivity epidemic and tangible solutions to get children moving.
In response to the report, Prof Russell Viner from the RCPCH said
“At a time where children should be at their most active, it’s concerning that half of seven year olds are not doing the recommended one hour of physical activity that’s advised each day – the Generation Inactive report is a welcome reminder that more must be done to improve the health of our nation’s children.   The report can be read here

Things branded as healthy
"Healthy snacks could do more harm than good" say researchers from universities in Munich & Pennsylvania.
This research was a series of randomised controlled trials to investigate the effect of fitness branding on restrained eaters’ food consumption and post-consumption exercise.
The report showed that while some may have restrained from eating, say, 500 calories in the shape of crisps, they could then end up consuming a similar amount in muesli. Read about this on NHS Choices

Protective things for summer
Do you know your UVB from your UVA and what exactly is SPF?A Royal Pharmaceutical Society survey into sunscreen use has revealed a worrying lack of understanding about the degree of sun protection different products provide.
In particular, many are unaware that the SPF rating alone displayed in sunscreen labelling does not guarantee good all round protection from potential sun damage. see here for an explanation

Safe things - our children?

New things for clinical audit

NICE is developing a new tool to help health and social care organisations audit the improvements they are making to their services. It is part of a redesign of the audit support NICE provides.
"We have changed our approach to audit support to focus on NICE quality standards, as the statements they contain are designed to drive measurable service improvements," said Sally Chisholm, NICE’s programme director for adoption and impact.
The package of support is in its final stages of development and the first tool will be available this summer.   See the news article  here

Things for Health Care Assistants

First Steps for HCAs has been developed as a programme for self-directed learning. It maps to a range of National Occupational Standards that can be printed off in the form of an assessment checklist that could form the basis of a portfolio of learning. Find the competency checklist, assessment quiz and reflective diary here.

Challenging things

In a challenge to the new Government, the RCPCH sets out what it believes needs to be done in the first 100 days to ensure the UK delivers high quality, effective child health services - and that child health is high on the political agenda.

The paper calls on the new Government to define a cross-departmental Child Health Strategy, agree measurable targets to evaluate progress, and appoint a Children’s Minister to coordinate and direct integration across health, education, and social care.

Things about person centred, coordinated care
'My life, my support, my choice' is a narrative report on children and young people with complex lives, from their perspective and that of the people who are important to them. Commissioners and providers are encouraged to use this document as a tool to have their own conversations with children and young people about their lives, their dreams and goals, and the way they want to be supported. It is hoped that it may empower children & young people and those around them to challenge their local services, to start conversations with them, and get involved in designing services and support.

Creswell Crags, 20 miles south east of Sheffield, was once Europe’s northern frontier of settlement. During this period of great climate change between 50,000 and 10,000 years ago, a series of caves at Creswell provided occasional shelter to nomadic hunters in search of food.
